I really like living in a blue state, but that's a hard opportunity to pass up.

Be careful if you appear in any way different. I couldn't move to a red state without risking the safety of my kid, while here in SF they've got teachers and staff who are supportive.

Enjoy the moonshine and passenger drinking

Take it, you can add to the blue voter population there

guessing youre a white male. you'll be fine. money is all that matters, right?

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I make less than $75k.. I would probably move to America, Tennessee, if you doubled my salary..

Go for it. Unless you're a woman, or gay, or an atheist, or an immigrant, or have kids, or ever plan to be ill.

Not to be over practical, but check the difference in rent/mortages. you might end up with another 5-10k post-tax savings. Also, no state income tax on pay (made up for w/ sales+property tax, of course).

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Don’t forget we don’t have an income tax here in TN either! But housing is expensive as shit!

The south can be great. The food and community, the wide open spaces for driving and riding. Cheap land and cheap gas. Cracker Barrel and Waffle House. There’s good down there, but also ugly.

I am shocked by how few commenters are thinking about what a red state means for certain human rights in legislation... if you were a woman, you could get screwed over in your healthcare for sure, for example

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

No state income tax. And is quite a pretty state

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

tennessee isnt that bad, i say go for it, PLUS when elections happen, you can be one of the people voting for change. Red states need more blue people, otherwise they will be red states forever

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 5

75k is life changing for many, see how much the pay impacts your life and compare it to what you'd lose by moving to TN.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

$75k is... *counts on fingers* more than double what I make. You big city people are swimming in it!

1 year ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 3

@op take the job then spend all your time saving up and punching up your resume so you can apply back to anywhere but tennessee.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Do all your X's live in Texas?

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If yes, then you should definitely hang your hat in Tennessee

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

there are southern progressives in tennessee and in the rest of the south. they are more vocal and aggressive about improving the lives of people then most people outside of the south understand.

I grew up red but turned blue while living outside of Nashville. Don’t worry, you’ll find your people.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

TN has no income tax and does have mountains. Khan Academy if you have children that need schooling.

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

From where? I live in VA so that wouldn't be a huge deal but if further...although abortion is banned so I wouldn't move there if you're planning on starting a family...

Just don't wear your politics on your sleeve and just be yourself. There are wonderful people everywhere. You've got to take a chance on them, just as they will get the opportunity to take a chance on you. You'll be busy with work and the rest of the time is yours to make what you want of it. The very best to you going forward!

Are you lgbtq? Non-white? “Weird”? If you answered yes, don’t do it. You’d be rolling some serious dice, my dude.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

Non-tennessee resident here. I travel a lot for work. Tennessee is a lot nicer than you might expect. Might be worth a visit

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Tennessee is a beautiful state. I would take it in a heartbeat.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I live in TN, it depends on the location. If it is near Nashville ya probably worth it, Memphis? couldn't pay me enough.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Evaluate all the "for" and "against". And have everything in WRITING before you even start moving.

1 year ago | Likes 113 Dislikes 4

So, so, so much this. Wonderful promises are vapor if they’re not in writing.

Honestly Tennessee is cheap as fuck to buy a house or property and has significant tax benefits. Also Dolly is there. Why not take the win and plan for the future. Or try and turn the state. Your choice.

1 year ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 3

Depends on where you want to buy- compared to CA prices yes cheap but our housing- like a lot of places went nuts. If you want to be in Nashville, Chattanooga, Knoxville you’ll be dissaponted

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

LA prices on housing anywhere near Nashville. I thought it’d be cheaper than CA when I moved here. Joke was on me.

Not sure that cherry-picking a newly built mansion to post is the counter argument you thought it was

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

You can find them anywhere if you look, this is like 100% useless info lol

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Do it, stash cash. There is a thriving blue community in Tennessee. Have a blast! +1

1 year ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 7

Thriving

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Thriving may be a bit of an overstatement…it does exist but barely

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Where?

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

It is left as an exercise for the reader to find this community.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

There's a few spots. Johnson City has a surprisingly high number of LBGT folks, though I suspect that the T part will become quite scarce.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Sounds like the name of a gay bar. /s

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There is a reasonably prominent one called "New Beginnings" there.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do it. $75k goes a long way in TN unless you're in Nashville

1 year ago | Likes 128 Dislikes 1

It's in Nashville lol

1 year ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 2

Just curious... but is it in Brentwood? I used to work for a company based out of there.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm from and grew up just south of Nashville and I will say that if you are straight and cis, you'll probably find it a fine place. (I am neither and have long since fled). Do look at their high sales tax and prepare, too!
Also, if you don't want to live in the actual city, you'll find many houses with yards and a slightly more rural feel in the immediate surrounding cities.

1 year ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Fwiw, the counties with Nashville and Memphis in them voted majority blue. Laws may suck, but you'd likely find people to relate with.

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

@op, is it 75k/yr or 75k more than what you're getting now?

Q2: what are you making now?

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

South of Nashville in May there will be a Renaissance Festival. Use that to de-stress.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nashville is a fun city. It’s a weird blue city on a very red state. But it’s great here.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fleeing small towns cause you fear your neighbors makes a lot cities blue.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nashville is the only place worth a damn in TN

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Knoxville is nice. People are chill. The people around the city though *banjo intensifies*

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The mayor is a POS, though.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Howdy. Knoxvillian here.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But it's an extra $75k, I'm already over 6 figs

1 year ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 3

Look at cost of living compared to where you are now. If you earn $75k more ($50k after taxes), and cost of living is $40k more than where you live now, is it still worth it?

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

CAN I HAVE YOUR OLD JOB!? O_o

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Then maybe you should talk in percentages instead.

50k to 125k is worth it. 100k to 175k is also worth it, as a career step. 150k to 225k is where I'm betting you're at, cause it's questionable. 500k to 575k? Hard pass.

HOWEVER... 225 to 300 might be worth it. It feels like 300k is a magic plateau in HR. Outside of Silicon Valley, that level of compensation edges towards company leadership and can start getting fringe benefits and major equity.

Can you adopt the wife and I? She wants to move to TN

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I can take you guys in. House trained I assume

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I am but still working on domesticating the wife. So far she's gone from feral goblin to Peggy Bundy
