I love the community I work in. The teachers and staff at my school are some of the most dedicated, kind-hearted, and generous individuals I have ever met. No time is that more obvious than the holiday season.

Our amazing school counselor calls for donations all year in preparation for winter. This year she was able to get over 100 brand new pairs of shoes for our kiddos.

The majority of teachers choose a child (or two, or three, or five) and buy them Christmas gifts. This year we had an even bigger response than usual. This is about half of the donated presents.

We live in a chilly, rainy place and a lot of our kids come to school every day in short sleeves. Local businesses and programs donate tons of coats to us which is helpful beyond belief.

The pride, the relief, the joy, and the gratitude that we see on the faces of our students and their families makes every penny spent worth it.

if you have a chance to help a child this winter, please do so. They'll remember it forever, I promise.

FP Edit: Wow, I am overwhelmed by your response! Your kindness is very appreciated and touches my heart.

If you're looking for a low-income school in your area to donate to: https://www.tcli.ed.gov/CBSWebApp/tcli/TCLIPubSchoolSearch.jsp

A lot of people have asked if they can donate to our school. If you would like to, please message me and I will give you the school's information.

Also, our amazing counselor deserves some love. For my FP request, I'd love it if you could send geeky jokes, kind words, encouragement, or anything else along those lines. I want to put together a bunch of comments to make her day.

Thank you and take care of yourself and others!

I love this stuff

My son's teachers got him some stuff when she knew I couldn't afford much. We try to pay it forward each year to other children now.

I adopt a family anonymously every year through a program at work. It feels so good to give even tho I don't get to see them get the stuff.

My mom taught in a low income school. Once her student got his first ever new outfit, and wouldn't take off the tags, he was so excited.

as a teacher at a low income school, this just warms my heart. reminds me of how awesome our parent/community liaison is as well

There is something about new shoes that makes you feel happy.

I just worked with a teacher that complained about having to provide snacks to kids who couldn't afford it. Your school is amazing OP.

On that teacher's behalf, I have easily spent at least $400 this year on my classroom. Those small things add up, and we don't get paid much

Look at those kick-ass stylin' jackets!

Ask around at other schools, see if they have some lost and found clothes that were never claimed.

I'm not crying. *Niagara falls* seriously, caring teachers fucking rock. If your grown kids turn out well, thank their teachers too!!!

This is a beautiful thing! My coworkers and I get three or four children in the foster system we buy gifts for, and nursing home residents.

My stepmom just bought a ton of stuff for a poor family whose 9yo kid was going through chemo. I wish I had the money to buy for everyone

Instead of buy geek crap from amazon

My office adopted a local school and we got a list of kids who usually don't have a Christmas at home. So we are being their Santa this year

#1 is actually what I I'm getting for Christmas: a new pair of tennis shoes. It's all I can afford this year.

Some kids will even write they want socks or shoes on angel tree cards. Always pick those.

This is awesome..Where do you teach? I've applied for teach for America and similar programs, aspire to teach in low socio-economic schools

In Tacoma, WA. It's a tough job, but so rewarding. It's fantastic to hear that you want to work in LSE schools - we need people like you!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thank you! And I'm so appreciative of what you do, keep up the good work.. I actually considered Tacoma as one of my first choices!!

This reminds me of when my fourth grade teacher took me shopping because my parents couldn't afford new clothes...

I love this! But with my knowledge of brands I would say champion isnt the longest lasting brand, which is a darn shame

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd otherwise agree but kids' shoe sizes grow so rapidly that it'd almost be a waste to get longer lasting shoes.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well you do see in the first pic the hole in the girls old shoe, but yea generally you're right

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Some people will never know that feeling of being really poor. It's almost a shame... it's a horrible thing but it allows you to appreciate

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

NOT being poor (if you get there) at a different level. It's why I don't think people like Trump, etc can govern effectively. They just have

No concept whatsoever of the plight of the most vulnerable. Literally born a millionaire, everything handed to him on a golden platter.

I'm not sure what my point is, I had a couple beers for no particular reason and now I'm rambling.

If you've read this far, I hope you have an amazing day! Life is short and precious, find the beauty.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Please list places where we can do things like this...I'd be in!

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Check your local nursing homes. We do dcs children. (Foster care) , we have donated to local women's shelters and food shelters.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Unless you live in a very ritzy area, you local school needs help! Call the nurse or counseling office and say you're looking to volunteer.

Last year my Aunt's kindergarten class was low income and I bought them character socks for her "prize" box. They loved them and I loved it

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This. You can't see it but the kid with large holes in their weathered socks sure can.
