This is a very close call. Happened in a polish city in November.
Recording is of a dashcam of a public bus.

Repeat after me: "NEVER overtake a vehicle at a zebra crossing!"

Everything's cool, those weren't even zebras.

Never heard it called a zebra crossing before.. was looking for the zebra cross here sign.

When you're stopped watch your mirror and get ready to lay on the horn.

Sobering reminder to slow down when approaching crosswalks. We're taught here to 'shadow the break', stop gasing, whether you see or not.

NEVER overtake a vehicle at a zebra crossing!

The Finnish traffic ticket high score for this particular stunt seems to be 77808 euros: https://www.is.fi/kotimaa/art-2000005138327.html

Never trust drivers to not pass a stopped vehicle.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Instead of calling them something harmless to lull them into a sense of false security, they should be called Death Stripes or Splatter Bars

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

People do it all the time here, and here pedestrians have the right of way, but nobody follows that rule, which I think actually is a law.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They have zebras in Poland? I thought they were in Africa or somewhere further south.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No zebras crossing in my area. They have to fend for themselves. Those kids should watch out though, that was close.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

....zebra crossing..

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Yeah, that's what it's called.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Back in day I've been hitching a lot. One of the driver showed me where he killed two kids leaving school bus. Mind the others.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Used to happen to me almost every day while walking to work.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’m from Brazil (horrible drivers) and Poland scared me a little. Was doing 100kmh in a 70 road, and every other car was passing me fast.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Darn, that was a lot of points...

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And Never overtake then turn left (or which ever side of the road your on)

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Seems like attempted murder to me, boss.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Manslaughter but yeah, I agree.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Actually you can. I fell for this trick question on my theoretical exam: car standing still before zebra, can you pass? Aparently you 1/?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

but at walking speed, please

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

can. If there are no pedestrians. I found that a dirty trick question. If a car stops for pedestrians it's illegal to overtake.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

This is why vehicular homicide should not be considered separate from other manslaughter charges. Too many get away with a lesser sentence>

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

> because of that bullshit. Your car/truck/van is a weapon, and should be treated with the same respect as any other weapon, and the same >

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

> consequences when you do not.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

"If you want to kill someone and serve as little time in prison as possible, hit them with your car." - criminal law prof I had in college

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Here's a fuckface who does this and actually nails a kid https://youtu.be/cKjJxQ54lVQ (kid is fine)

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Damn, couldn’t even see the kid till it was to late with that sun glare.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Couldnt even see the kid OR the crosswalk.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Man i got worried about those kids.

6 years ago | Likes 128 Dislikes 0

They call them zebra crossings?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Because of the stripes.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I get that. We just call them crosswalks.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In the UK they're pedestrian crossings, but each type of crossing has a name, eg Zebra, Pelican, Toucan, Puffin, Pegasus, ect.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How interesting.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A UPS driver saved my life by honking as I crossed in front of him. A driver blew through in the next lane. Thanks Brown.

6 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

If you're one of those people who drive thinking, "I'd rather kill someone than be late," then please die soon.

6 years ago | Likes 84 Dislikes 4

“If you’d rather kill someone than be late, start with yourself.”

6 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

I’d like to blame the driver but he may have just thought the bus was stopping for riders and not thought twice about it.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

In the middle of an intersection?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Zebra crossings are usually VERY visible. https://media-cdn.sueddeutsche.de/image/sz.1.4595619/704x396 But not matter why: he is still to

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

to blame. If vision was blocked maybe understandable, but still his mistake. That's why you get points on your license: to learn from it.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Im with you, definitely at fault. But I can see how it could happen

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

At a crosswalk? What kind of stupid are you?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

good lord, zero to 60. I just meant the driver probably wasn’t exactly paying attention as to why the bus was stopping. He’s still at fault

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

but I wouldn’t say it’s exactly him being dangerously reckless.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was gonna make a zebra joke and then my butthole bit through my jeans.

6 years ago | Likes 734 Dislikes 2

You should feed it

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The zebra would bite though them too.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah but that's a good bite

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You can't make a joke while your butthole is biting through your jeans?? Pfft...amateur..

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Why does the driver in the left lane think the other driver stopped at the crosswalk, if not to let someone cross?

6 years ago | Likes 444 Dislikes 6

Because some people are unaware assfucks.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

It's a bus, they stop quite a lot.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Not paying attention. Buses stop to pickup people. Unfamiliar with stops. There's probably a bunch of reasons people make mistakes.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

People think if they are in a hurry, the traffic laws become optional.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Busy updating facebook status to : Just about to bowl over a couple of kids

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’s a bus so probably picking up people. You never see public busses stop?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

True, but the road signs and markings on the road itself clearly mark it as a pedestrian crossing

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I saw the head of the state health department where I live drive through a crosswalk like that with a car full of little kids.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He just missed a woman who had crossed in front of me.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thought is usually completely absent in these scenarios

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Apart from one: I'm more important than anything else.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Because stupid

6 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Happens all the time here, people think it's just traffic in front of that lane. I would like flashing lights when people cross

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They put one of those near me. Push button, wait a few seconds, get flashing lights to stop traffic. No one bothers to push the button.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bold of you to assume he was thinking

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In poland, cars almost never stop at the crosswalk, you have to wait until both sides are clear, then you can walk and cross the street.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The way it should be, IMO. The lightest/nimblest of two objects intersecting should always give way

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Then cars should be banned in cities.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's the same here in Canada , they don't stop. Which makes me think if is the right method. Why don't put stops sings instead?

6 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 2

A stop sign at every crosswalk, requiring every car to stop as it passes, would ruin any hope of traffic flow.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

People seem to respect more stops signs in my opinion

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

He's a cunt. I hope they got his number, but he wasn't going slow.

6 years ago | Likes 222 Dislikes 3

It's a bus, probably thought it was stopping at a bus stop maybe?

6 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 9

Probably thought it was stopping to pick up passengers at a bus stop

6 years ago | Likes 84 Dislikes 4

Probs, though if they'd been paying attention they would have seen the crossing markings on the road

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Very true

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In the UK it's illegal to stop within a certain distance of a crossing... UNLESS you're a service vehicle, of which buses count. Which is

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

pretty ridiculous.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Most countries don’t have bus stops at a zebra crossing

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

there are a few in Austria that are in very close proximity to bus stops for convenience, although usually with lights regulating traffic

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Or in the middle of an intersection.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

To be fair it's a bus, could be at a bus stop.

6 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 11

It already left the bus stop. I don't think there'd be a bus stop in the middle of a crossroad, 10 meters past the previous busstop.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The crossing has warning signs on both sides of the road. I'm more in the view it's "I'm more important than anything else" driving.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Even though. That car was still speeding and that bus was obviously stopping in his lane and not on the curb.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

More importantly, even at a cross walk, always look for cars

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

True, though in this case you'd be looking in the other direction cause the driver was driving on the wrong side.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Make me think of the view of "I might trust people.. but I still look both ways when crossing a one way street."

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Too many people don’t know this. That car probably didn’t even see the poor kids.

6 years ago | Likes 99 Dislikes 0

This happens all the time up the street. There's a bar on the corner and we sit there and get drunk and watch ppl almost die. It's crazy.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And it's a busy 2 way street with 2 lanes going both ways. Absolute madness.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He saw the bus stopping for them though,

6 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

And he/she also saw the crossing and was probably just out to get those kids.. Crazy ass people out there

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't know what they saw, it's what we saw. One quick look at the dash is all it takes. Buses stop all the time.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

In UK they indicate when pulling into stops and then indicate when they're pulling away again.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Indeed, in Canada as well. I don't mean to excuse the driver, just indicate that it's not otherworldly to make an error, even a lethal one.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I agree that we're only human and people do make honest mistakes, just hope this driver learns to pay attention to road signs.
