Sound of My Voice (2011)

IMDB Rating: 6.7/10
Brit Marling is fantastic! This is one of my favorite movies of all time. This low budget film about documentary filmmakers infiltrating a cult who worships a woman who claims to be from the future. A film that will leave you questioning what just happened.

Coherence (2013)

IMDB Rating: 7.1/10
Another all time favorite of mine, this has been in a few imgur lists before. This mind bending film will leave you questioning what would you do to survive? Its better going into the movie not knowing much. Just go watch... and pay attention!

400 Days (2015)

IMDB Rating: 4.5/10
Yes it does say Dane Cook, but give it a chance! Honestly i was worried too, but this thriller about four astronauts sent on a simulated mission set in an underground bunker is worth the watch. Just when you think you have it figured out you dont.

Another Earth (2011)

IMDB Rating: 7/10
Brit Marling back at it again. This is a beautiful film about the discovery or a duplicate earth within traveling and communication distance from our earth.

Listening (2014)

IMDB Rating: 5.6/10
What would happen if genius grad students invented a mind reading technology? It just might threaten their lives and the future itself. This low budget thriller misses on some things but it is still an enjoyable watch.

Time Lapse (2014)

IMDB Rating: 6.4/10
This has been featured in a few lists on imgur before, but putting it here for those who are still holding out. A camera that takes a picture of the future? Harmless enough right? Watch this!

The Signal (2014)

IMDB Rating: 6.1/10
C'mon who doesn't love Laurence Fishburne? Another film that is better if you don't know much going in. About some friends who are chasing a computer genius only to wake up after an event leaves them unconscious. That's as specific as i can be

I Origins (2014)

IMDB Rating: 7.3/10
Such a beautiful and heartbreaking film. Part love story, part Sci-fi mystery this film will have you starring deeply into your loved ones eyes and holding onto that image for life. Also Brit Marling again!

Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)

IMDB Rating: 7/10
Probably the most seen movie on this list due to its stars, Aubrey Plaza and Jake Johnson. This hilarious sci-fi movie about a man searching for a time travel partner will make you laugh and tug on those heartstrings.

Terminus (2015)

IMDB Rating: 5.4/10
No not that Terminus. This film is about a man and his family following a near fatal accident. When he makes a discovery, things change for not only his family but the world.

Space Station 76 (2014)

IMDB Rating:4.9/10
I'll be the first to admit not everyone will like this film. Its definitely a weird quirky take on the future, set on a space station that seems to be set in the 1970s. Its got some star power if you aren't intrigued by the concept, with Patrick Wilson, Liv Tyler, and Matt Bommer.

Uncanny (2015)

IMDB Rating: 6.3/10
My Brother described this as a poor mans Ex Machina. While i think its unfair to compare anything to Ex Machina, such a great beautiful film, i can see his point. A journalist gets a week of access to interview the inventor of the worlds first perfect AI. Some plot lines are very obvious if you watch closely.

Predestination (2014)

IMDB Rating: 7.4/10
This made some year end lists when it came out and deservingly so! So i apologize if this is widely known and seen. Ethan Hawke is great in this time travel crime movie. I was able to see some twists and turns coming so pay attention!

Almost Human (2013)

IMDB Rating: 4.6/10
This film reminds me of the 80's for some reason, and that is not a bad thing! This low budget alien monster movie was a surprise. Don't let the reviews discourage you!

The Machine (2013)

IMDB Rating: 6.1/10
This artificial intelligence movie will have you fearful of what would happen in the future if the military was able to build a perfect android killing machine. Caity Lotz is amazing!

These are some of my personal favorites, I get that some of the ratings are low but I enjoyed them.

The official Brit Marling post

Hmm, I stopped believing reviews after Batman v Superman.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

400 days - not worth.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

400 days was extreme low budget and frankly so was the entire movie experience. On the other hand anything Brit Marling touches works great

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

The shit ratings really make me wanna see these!!

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I loved Another Earth!

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

So good!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Imma let you finish but I really thought I Origins was a turd. All my friends love it tho.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Nope seen every one! Good list! thx @OP

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

Thanks!

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Well, you are correct on the second part. I have missed all of these.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Have you ever seen Source Code? For me it's one of the best sci-fi movies out there.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

I'm still salty at how that gem underperformed.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ah, the Internet Movie Batadase.

10 years ago | Likes 68 Dislikes 0

Ahahaha, every time too!

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Ya i cant trust you afer "400 days" recommendation. Worst movie i have ever seen (and thats saying something). No redeeming twist or ending

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

"Yes it does say Dane Cook..."

10 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 6

it was a decent film, and Cook wasn't even awful in it.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was disappointed when he said "not that terminus." When will they make a foundation movie?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

No Dead Seven? Starring most of The Backstreet Boys and N'SYNC.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

was it any good? just heard about it last week.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am planning to watch it today so I will report back but how could it not be?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Need more lists like this, want more science-fi films.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

+1 for listing more than 50% that I've never heard of.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Aubrey Plaza in Safety not guaranteed is awesome!

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

400 days was a pity. it started out so well, but then kinda degenerated into nonsense with a deeply unsatisfying final act.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I have heard a lot about space odyssey 2001 but have never seen it, is it worth a go?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Nope. Boring as shit. I love sci fi and I enjoy Kubrick but this film...guess I'm not fanboy enough to love it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends. How high are you?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

At least 12.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Beautiful piece of cinema despite Kubrick's intentional non-answers. I'd suggest reading the book(s) first (they're short).

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Do it. You won't regret it.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Only watched one of these. +1

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Have to agree Brit Marling is amazing loved her in another earth and I origins.

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

I'm a Brit Marling fan. She also did a role in Community. She also co-wrote Another Earth.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Who was she in community. I watched the show up till season 5 and don't remember seeing her

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2nd season Valentines episode. Britta thought she was a lesbian.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

She's also fantastic in The East, one of my favourite films!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Possibly the 3rd worst film ever made.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

The Man from Earth (2007)

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My exact thought when reading this list. Amazing brain teaser, unique setup, great story. Perfect 5/7.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Upvoting for the 5/7 reference

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How did you find this over 3 months later? Haha!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't even know! I think I got the link for the original movie list, came into the comments, found your one and had to upvote it

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ahhhh, I see. Makes sense! :D Thanks!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This was such a good movie. Unfortunately, just the fact that it is 100% dialogue and set in a single house might be a turn off for some.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*whistles*

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ex machina

10 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 12

I totally agree, but it also got really good reviews and was popular. Did you see Uncanny?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I just watched it last night! It's brilliant!

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Were you as unsettled by the Knife scene as me?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

SO FUCKING UNSETTLED BY PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING but I think it was pretty much perfect. Really great scifi all around.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Predestination is not a mind fuck.. it is a violent dry gangbang

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 3

accurate

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know where I come from, but where do all you zombies come from ?!?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

i blame the t-virus

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Most predictable "twist" ever... So much so you'd think it was an M Night Shamalian movie.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 7

I actually remember reading a comic with the *exact* same twist (I'm serious). But they played it for laughs.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Agreed. I hated the movie.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Well I wouldn't say I hated it, it was still a good plot, they just made it too obvious by wanting to be clever :/

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Haaaated this movie.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*hangs head in shame* i know, it's just awful of me.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

400 Days and The Signal are both solidly entertaining. I Origins isn't good sci-fi. It's like "here's science ok it's actually magic"

10 years ago | Likes 145 Dislikes 8

The Signal better than I Origins? I thought The Signal was just awful. I Origins at least had believable acting. The Signal was dog shit.

I took the ending not as that religion prevailed, but that he decided to choose/have become of faith.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Accurate

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

IS there any place i can watch the signal online? Netflix doesn't have it and you can't download it from TPB. It looks good..

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

hoooooo

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I thought I-origins was very disappointing. Had a good premise but then turned into utter garbage.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I agree. I feel like I could have watched only the trailer and still gotten the same amount of head scratch effect.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Agreed, I was watching it, then googled a term the love interest dropped early on, was a religious reference. It just fell apart.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The signal is... eeeeeh why do some people even like this film ?

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

If anything people should watch the original one.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's an original ?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

While Lawrence is very lovable, he can't seem to land himself in a decent movie, besides the Matrix.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can say it. The Signal was an enormous heaping pile of steaming dog shit.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I just watched it and i completely agree. What a shit waste of time

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I liked it because it felt off, and gave the characters a journey which slowly then more increasingly unraveled reality, and that ending yo

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Opinions are great, y'know?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

So is having a reason behind them, even if it's just "because," which is what was asked. Being an insecure and defensive dick isn't helpful.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Opinion stays opinion. There is absolutely no need to insult other people's. Subjective /= Objective

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

400 days sucked for me.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

I agree with @moarDuolingo 's take, & I get why it sucks for people. There was still this raw appeal though, even with the shit payoff

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

True. It started off great and went nowhere after 30 minutes. Literally

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

IN can't agree with this more. It really petered out towards the end.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How many of these are on Netflix?

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I think I origins is on Amazon prime

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would have loved if the list added Netflix, prime,HBO .......

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

just searched these, Coherence is available but only few others are listed, but none are available in FI. sad.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@vintagevag I Origins isn't, but Coherence is

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

On Amazon prime, I mean - not netflix

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'll watch coherence tonight and. Your right origins isn't on Amazon prime it's on HBO go

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Coherence is awesome! Another Earth was kind of a dissapointment, not that it was bad movie, but I expected more.

10 years ago | Likes 116 Dislikes 3

How funny! I found Another Earth to be a far superior movie to Coherence ... different strokes, I guess

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It was more of a personal story. I think sometimes we get too far into the sci-fi of things and forget the people.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Exactly. I expected nothing going in, and was drawn in by the powerfully crafted story and characters. +1

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I kept waiting for them to go to the other earth.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah, its like they played with the idea, but didn't deliver.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Are you me? 'Cause I've the EXACT same thoughts 'bout those two films.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Another Earth was very good, just got mislabeled, which mislead people into expecting something different!

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Yea I love Another Earth. Its very simple and beautiful. I'd read a brief description beforehand cuz theres not much Sci-fi.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This. I watched it when it first came out with no expectations and loved it.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I didn't know what it was about, and I thought it was amazing! But my friends found it disappointing, too. I think it's slow but good.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Coherence handheld shoot was a bit annoying at first, the plot was awesome I was literally held down to my seat for the whole ride.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I watched it an melancholia at the same time. Another earth was a million times better

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

fuck off melancholia is great, not that another earth is bad, melancholia is a work of art. some of the scenes are breathtaking.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

maybe you should have familiarised yourself with lars von triers work before going in expecting star trek

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I obviously wasn't expecting star trek. Coincidentally - I kind of dislike star trek :\ Like I said, I really enjoyed another earth.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Another Earth wasn't sci fi at all. It was a drama and literally just said " Oh hey another earth is coming near our earth lol"

10 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 1

it is sci-fi. just because it hasnt got spaceships or aliens or whatever. the plot is driven by the appearance of another earth. its sci-fi.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The plot has almost nothing to do with the other planet. The plot is drive by the girl and the guy and the DUI. The planet plot distracts.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, that was my problem with it too, I thought it was going to be all scifi and "ooh another earth what could this mean?!" but nope.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

There was soooo little other earth that it made the film a huge fucking disappointment. Soooo long for sooo little

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

The story was good though and kind of messed up.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah the story was okay, but it would have worked just fine without the whole another Earth part.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

THE OTHER EARTH IS A PLOT DEVICE. it is sci-fi.its not the films fault the nerds definition of sci-fi is spaceships, aliens and time travel.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I understand why its scifi, but I think that its pointless, as in the plot device could have been literally anything. Still, not a bad movie

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It wasn't sci-fi. It was definitely drama. The plot device could've been a mirror, if she went through would it be fantasy?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

No he's right. It was a plot device but it was the worst kind. Deus Ex Machina type. No rhyme or reason. It just fixes errrthang.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hey @OP, have you seen Primer or Moon? Those are my personal favorites.

10 years ago | Likes 123 Dislikes 12

Have you seen go fuck yourself?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

I love Moon. I think that, along with Fight Club and Big Lebowski, it's my favorite film.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Moon is beautiful.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I watched Moon finally after seeing it a million times on the front page, and was slightly disappointed. It was just ok.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So happy someone mentioned Moon, one of my favorites.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also, there's this website you should try out. It's called Duolingo. And, BTW, have you ever heard of Star Wars?

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 6

If you want to find out more about either of those things check out a website called google.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

OH FUCK ME, I loved Primer, I loved how subtle it was, oh jesus I loved it

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I checked this list because I saw Moon last night! I was really impressed.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Epic movie!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Moon is a real gem

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Surprising amount of people don't get this joke, especially considering this was posted to /r/movies

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I watched Primer with two other people and we loved it. At the end we turned to each other and said "I think... we need to watch >>

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

<< that again." So we did. Only movie I've ever watched back-to-back.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Moon was fantastic! But I've seen it on so many lists on here so it out. Primer was just okay to me

10 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 3

Time Lapse could have been good. The acting completely ruined the movie IMO. Primer, on the other hand, incredible. Idk, who am I?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

IMO good sci-fi movie needs to put you thinking. In that sense Primer is something totally different. Loved it!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

hi got rooted here because this post was stolen, anyways i love brit marling too and that trio is developing a netflix series and im excited

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you for not listing Primer, Moon, or The Man From Earth <3 All great movies, but they're on every fucking list

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The issue with Primer is that the director literally set out to create a confusing movie that you wouldn't "get" the first time around.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

If you thought Primer was hard to grasp (I still think so!) then you should try to sort out his other movie, Upstream Color.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

People who sit and watch Primer repeatedly to "decode" it completely miss the message: "time travel is a very fucked up and terrible idea."

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I loved Primer because of how utterly disturbing it was It left me feeling very odd. I didn't even care about the loose ends unresolved

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have to watch primer again as I watched it with a question asker. very frustrating. I just wanted to slap them

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

"Okay but what's going on?" "I have no idea." "You've seen this three times." "I KNOW SHUT UP AND JUST WATCH!"

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*man jumps off cliff* "whoa! Whoa! Hold up, bro. Did he.. did he just jump? Why did he jump? Where did he land? Did he get hurt?" Dude! Its

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Been less than 4 seconds since he jumped! The motherfucker is still falling! Shut the fuck up and just watch! You'll see in literaly 10 sec!

Not in my opinion

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Moon has a score of 8. It should be a 10. Adjust everything else accordingly.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

I like seeing the critic vs user on RT, I won't base my viewing solely on a review but I like seeing the difference. but I liked BvsS soooo

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah saw BvS yesterday. Wasn't terrible like the reviews said. It was entertaining and had both good and bad aspects. IMHO a 7.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My preferences usually mean if a critic dislikes it I will most likely love it.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 5

Same

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Most watchable movies have a rating of 6.0-7.5, few movies go above that range.

10 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 3

Its because they are mostly space sci-fi. They are never extremely popular. Throw in vampires who just love yo have sex with everything (1)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And all these would be 10/10 (2)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think it's because some ppl expect sci fi movies to be spaceships fighting and laser shootouts, and if it's not, give it a low rating.

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

BvS was great and got bad ratings....critics are retards just to be asshats. dont trust their raitings

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

I thought BvS was an incoherent mess. Opinions are opinions, though. Everyone has one. Enjoy what you like, I say! Damn all else.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

Take "Event Horizon" with 6,7 on IMDB. That score was much lower some years back, but it became a cult classic. It's a fantastic movie

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Even a 6.7 makes me sad because Event Horizon deserves a higher score, imo. A score of 7.0 for Another Earth makes me cringe, tho. Too high

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Agreed. It's one of my favorite movies the Sci-Fi/Horror genre. Movies with a score below 7 generally fly under the radar of so many people.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

imdb ratings are largely meaningless these days, most people have crappy taste.dark knight rises is #62 highest rated film of all time there

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I always give sci fi a 3 star lead for just being scifi. Most of the population just doesn't get it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A raiting is subjective, you don't have to agree to a rating to like a movie, you just like it because you do.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I used to swear by ratings on imbd then some 8+ movies like Birdman left me clueless, and some low rating movies are great watch!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So what? Can't you make up your own mind? Even if a movie's bad, it's still sometimes worth seeing.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

They are my favorites. Look up your favorite movies bet they aren't all 8s or higher

10 years ago | Likes 138 Dislikes 17

Next time use ratings from Rotten Tomatoes. Much more accurate in my experience. Great list, thanks!

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

I find Rotten Tomato ratings to be more inaccurate imo. Critics tend to be pretentious wankers circle jerking over dumb shit.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

hey idk how cheesy you like your sci-fi, one of my favorites is Ice Pirates!, its definitely a B-movie, but check it out

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why then even include the IMDB rating? If they're your favorites - just post em up there, fuck the ratings.

10 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 7

I agree, don't include them. I always ignore them at IMDB 'cause usually they make no sense.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Mine are, but that's because I'm a snob movie purist that is usually too scared to watch anything lower than 7 on imdb
