You know what's good for people's nerves? Not this.

Here's some cell phone video from the Air Asia flight the other day that started shaking 90 minutes after takeoff. They had to turn around and the plane was shaking like this the whole 90 minutes back.

Fuck.

My inside are shaking just thinking about this.

No worries, it's just a flat spot on the tire.

Whats the problem? My car does the same thing.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Your car fails, you die and maybe a couple others. The plane fails, over 200 people die, not counting who the plane falls on.

From what I understand, planes are safer the weeks after something like this. The people checking it gets a bit more alert for a while.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

sorry buddy, have a safe flight!

someones granny must of thrown some coins in the engine for good luck.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah that's not supposed to happen. Shaking is one thing but holy fuck that engine

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Alright, why couldn't it land at a nearby airport? Why fly back to the one you came from, that flight path shows in went by other cities.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My guess is that's the airport with maintenance facilities and the plane was probably in no danger of falling out of the sky, just shaking.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Western Australia is pretty desolate. If you're going to have a bad landing, probably best to have it near the only major city so that 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

rescue crews have a chance to actually get to you and hospital beds are available. Those two other cities have a population under 50k. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(that's 50k added together)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Reminds me of my 9 hour flight to Japan which had about 8 hours of turbulence. It sucks and it's scary.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That is one plane I am willing to board, after the repairs obviously. With that kind of stress test and still flying. Count me in.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Aluminum fatigues pretty badly, so they likely have a ton of stress cracks now.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Speaking from experience?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If the turbulence is strong enough, yes. Rather be loopy and high when the jet disintegrates

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes. I at one point was eating 10-15 2mg bars in a day. It was bad.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

3 1mg is my limit.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Eh, most planes can fly on one engine for long enough to make it to an airport.

8 years ago | Likes 112 Dislikes 11

pretty sure its one engine and half a wing

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

«plane catches fire» eh, most planes can fly on one engine, it's fine

8 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 2

That plane could have been at the ETP in the middle of the Atlantic and they would have made it to land.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It's the landing thing that's too difficult.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

all bowing planes are able to effectively glide to a safe landing plus fly on a single engine. good engineering and design rules.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Yes engineers have designed the earth to always have a safe place to land within gliding range.....

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, they're not.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Who do they bow to? I'm guessing the laws of physics.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unless an unbalanced turbofan fucking disintegrates and takes half the wing. Or can a plane fly on one wing too?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That still had all of its engine power, and a significant amount of it's lift is generated by the fuselage.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thats impressive!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And that pilot is a retard for not shutting it down.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 29

if it wasn't shut down the frequency of that vibration I'm sure would have been much much higher.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

There isn't a turbine shaft brake for engines like that, like @oldwhitebelly said, its probably offline or idling at best.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Huh, it's almost like planes are carefully designed by professional engineers with multiple failsafes for every foreseeable failure mode!

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

It's not the lack of engine that is the problem. It's the structural integrity of the plane (which is not designed to fly that way).

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

No this is still passable, if the vibrations were to harsh the shear ping holding the engine would fail.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They are designed to run on unbalanced engines, like if a bird flies into it and breaks part of the fan.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Now knowing that I'd still probably need my brown pants if I was in it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

All planes can fly on one engine to the scene of the crash

8 years ago | Likes 147 Dislikes 2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well he is right, but in this situation the concern would be the engine catching fire or exploding from the stress and friction.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Twin engine aircraft are designed to operate with one engine perfectly normal and can take off and land fine.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Takeoff after a certain speed, and have to have a designation within ETOPS range.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The pilot actually asked the passengers to pray. Nothing restores peace of mind like your PILOT asking you to pray.

8 years ago | Likes 375 Dislikes 14

Would lose my shit completely!!!!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"There's no reason to become alarmed ... By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane"

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Xa xa yes he is the Dude????.ok folks please spend all the goodwill you have

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

From what I've found, the pilot said it like "If you would like, Pray. It might help" as in Help you calm down.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1. Don't be an idiot and spread false facts. The engine had a problem. They shut it off and due to wind it was shaking.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

2. He said everything was in order and nothing crazy to be alarmed for. BUT if it helps YOU , you can pray. He was a professional.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

in the source linked the pilot does not ask to pray, he asks for everyone co-operation as their survival would depend on that.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I have a video of the turbine spitting out fire 30k ft in the air. LAX to PHX. Whole plane shook like this before hand. Then boom.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They couldn't shut down that turbine?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't think the pilots knew there was an issue until it went boom. Then instantly, pilot= *everyone take a seat* -hard left turn-

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Turbine has no brakes. So even when cut off it will keep turning and shaking.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ahah, because of airspeed.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can't imagine why it wouldn't have brakes, though. Its got starter motors and such which should be able to load it down at need.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but they got back safely so the prayer worked.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 13

And if they didn't then God just had better plans for them anyway so fuck em xD

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

you know what the worst part is? everyone was given $20 vouchers after that! might as well not give anything at all!

8 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

Well, they were gonna give more until they figured out how much it was gonna cost to clean the ship out of each and every seat

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*** shit . Fucking auto correct

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, that's awful. A Captain should never add to panic.

8 years ago | Likes 139 Dislikes 4

The engine could fall apart at any moment and kill everyone. Emergency procedure says land ASAP, but we're over an ocean... time to pray

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pilots are people too

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That engine was actually shut down because it lost a blade, but there are no brakes inside so it kept windmilling.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

in the source linked the pilot does not ask to pray, he asks for everyone co-operation as their survival would depend on that.

8 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

which is not very reassuring

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 7

I was just pointing out that the reporter says he asked to pray but not what's shown in the video, maybe in the full version.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The people probably know something is wrong with plane shaking. Would you rather know something is bad and fix it, or it get worse?
