Goddamn owls are awesome

I'm pretty sure that's a stress posture, all straight and slender like that. It's trying not to be seen. Owls are very sensitive and easily bothered animals that do /not/ belong in pet homes.

Where is the owl? I just see a branch

How many rotations until the owl's head unscrews itself?

What kind of owl is it?

They are witches/wizards

In the UK, since Labour won the election, it's illegal NOT to have an owl.

You missed the meeting. Sorry

Owls are like Fennec foxes, or boats. You don’t wanna own one, you want to be friends with someone that owns one.

You don't need an owl to post an owl

1 year ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

You need to get an Owl Library card. You can take out up to six owls at any time and you can keep them for a month.

Amazing. Sounds like a Pokémon Library. I declare you Mayor of Pallet Town. Don't tell Team Rocket.

As an American I agree! I've looked in to it. We can't have them here! I can buy all the guns I want but no owls! Anyone in England want to trade an owl for an AR-15?

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You can get a permit... Goodluck with that tho.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Seems like you can get a permit but only if you are a rescue

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There are other avenues. But yeah permits for raptors and exotic birds do exist.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I guess I should say it's dependent on your state also. In Colorado I can't really get anything fun. I guess my sheepadoodle will have to do.

They make terrible pets but they look good in videos. You don't want one and one doesn't want to live with you.

Thank you! Owls are wild animals and also predators. In captivity many of them will live 20+ years, but care of them is going to be similar level of difficulty as any other non domesticated animal like foxes, otters, or bobcats.

All of which people try to keep as housepets, of course.
For which I blame, in part, how increasingly separated people are from nature. If someone's grown up only ever seeing dogs, cats, pigeons, and maybe the occasional squirrel, of course they'd have a hard time with the concept that a fox isn't going to be like a dog at all.
(yes people have been trying to keep exotic animals in their homes since homes were invented, but still.)

I worked at a raptor rehabilitation center. What I learned about working with owls is they’re incredibly… dumb. Their eyes extrude into their skull giving them extreme telescopic vision, but it didn’t leave much room for brains. About the only thing that micro-brain is capable of is HATE.

My understanding is that they're generally less intelligent than other raptors, but not necessarily as dumb as they can seem. What they /are/ is less responsive to the sorts of signals and training methods that work on other raptors, giving the impression of them being dumber due to being harder to work with. They're also very high-strung, sensitive animals, which (beyond them having a lot of sharp edges) is the main reason they make bad housepets.
