We recently had someone move out, and they ruined the carpet. I decided to rip it up, and found hardwood under it

This is it before. We painted the walls a neutral green color, Recycled Glass, and it's hard to see, but there are blood stains and God knows what the other stains are, so I decided to just rip it up.

LOOK. HARDWOOD! I jumped for joy when I saw it. Definitely saved us some money on this find.

You can tell it has some stuff on the surface, but all in all it's not in bad sbape.

Another picture of it where you can see just a wee bit of surface damage.

So I started ripping up the carpet edging strips or whatever they're called.

This is after the first pass with a 36 grit sand paper on the drum floor sander. And air moved up to a 60 grit next.

I finished it off with an 80 grit sandpaper and put an edger on all the spots close to the wall. Same process 36 grit, then 60 grit, then 80 grit. I dont have any picture of the staining process.

We used a weathered gray stain by verathane, and made sure the floor was clear of all debris. We probably vacuumed and swept it at least 5 times to make sure it was clean. We did 2 coats of the stain and 2 coats of polyurethane finish. I added cove shoe molding all around the room, to hide any imperfections around the edges of the baseboards. Then I hit the baseboards with the wrong colored paint, and was wondering what the hell I did wrong (paint wasnt labelled correctly lol) I did it again with 2 coats of the right paint ( I used a Behr Premium High Gloss Ultra White Indoor/Outdoor Enamel paint.) This gave us the final results as you see in this picture and the following.

I hope you enjoyed the process I shared. My wife really likes it, and I an very happy with the end result as well.

ugh. reminds me that my parents replaced the carpet back home. Found a beautiful hardwood floor under it but they covered again it anyways.

Having done this in a 100yr old house: book yourself a massage now... also, kudos to you for all the hard work!

Stunning, nice work!!!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Looks great. So much nicer than carpet.

Being a landlord is one of the shittest things I’ve ever done. Some tenants used to call me to replace fucking lightbulbs. A LIGHTBULB FFS!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Maybe if you tear up the hardwood therell be carpet underneath

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Should have used stain instead of paint.

6 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 2

?. He said stain is what he used?

Holy crap! Great job! I love the color

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love the gray color. It's an upcoming trend and you see more of it in new, high end apartments. Good job!

6 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 17

Leave hardwood floors outta your trends sonny!

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I guess I don't understand how that's grey.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Um....neutral green isnt a thing.....you need Agreeable Gray

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just plain white - a white blue white - looks clean.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would’ve thinned the grey paint to show the lively wood grain, instead of killing it solid.

6 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 4

How do you think stain? I've never heard of that before. I'm sure it's just mixing mineral spirits in it, but I'm curious if that's it.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

thin*

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

(Paint thinner, dries fast and cleaner than mineral spirits) It stains nicely, I’ve seen it on different hues, finished satin or glossy.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Nice, but... such a sad colour.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Boomers, always taking something great and covering it with blood stained carpet.

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 4

Whoever nailed tackstrips to a hardwood floor should be taken to the woodshed.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Having done this in my own house, good job!! It's a fuck ton of work but it's so worth it. The colors are beautiful together btw

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good job. Nice when things work out the way you want them to.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What kind of retard carpets a hardwood floor???

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There might be germs left. I would burn the house. Also you might want to slather yourself in Purell.

My dream floor...

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Looks great ! Now the next tennant can ruin the wood floor ;)

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Congrats! The hardwood floor in the apt I live in now is the worst I've ever seen. Probably never resurfaced in 112 years.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tragic

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Neat job! I need mine doing... There's a plane at 10 o'clock

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm SURE that the next renter won't destroy that floor.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well the stain already has

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Great. I think now you have to change walls color or maybe is just the pic that makes it look weird.

6 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 8

Only looks weird because the trim is painted.never paint over hardwood..I'll never understand why people buy expensive wood just to paint it

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

I think it looks fine. It's your place; don't let the internet sway you if you like it.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

No way I love the way the wall color and the floors look together. The picture may not do it justice, but it looks great in my opinion.

6 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

It looks like mint chocolate chip

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You know I thought the same thing at first lol, but it darkened up a little

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sorry, that guy doesn't like it, have to repaint, not like you have to live there or anything.

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

No I aim to please. I am going to redo the whole room and post it again! ;)

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Might just be me but staining that floor gray is almost as great of an offence as putting carpet over.

6 years ago | Likes 1448 Dislikes 97

Depends on where it is honestly. The walls are light enough that it might be charming in a really sunny place like FL or SoCal

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

is the same guy who took these great reddish floors and made them look like beach tones.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

Those reddish floors were terrible, I’d rather have throw rugs than that bs

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Maybe helps to hide the imperfections

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That’s why I come here. To watch others get criticized to ease the pain caused by my overly-critical father. IT WAS A DINOSAUR PAINTING DAD!

6 years ago | Likes 105 Dislikes 3

Be. Better.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Son, I am disappoint.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Same here. Use an oil or sealer and let that natural beauty shine

6 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 4

Not all wood is beautiful, found ugly oak under my pergo, rather stay with laminate until I can get carpet

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it might just be the lighting but in most of the pics ot looks like it's a dark hard wood that's incredibly dusty

6 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 4

My thoughts exactly.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

The floors look dusty.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Looks kind of dusty

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

It's a bit dark for my preference but the contrast with the light walls looks pretty nice

6 years ago | Likes 210 Dislikes 1

The issue isn't that it's dark, but that it's very grey and washed out. Loses all the lustre of the wood.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I bet it looks better in person. Their phone takes potato pics and they took those pics at night too.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Might be the lighting.

6 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

I like gray stained wood, although I think this is a bit heavy. The important thing is that it's still a million times better than carpet.

6 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 2

Until you hear the banging footstep of a two year old who doesn't really weigh 200lb

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

May as well have spray painted it with Economy Black...

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 7

or painting the walls green

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Is there something wrong with my monitor? That stain is brown.

6 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 4

It's grey with the wood showing through

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same. I see a dark brown. No mistaking it to me. But I’m on my phone...darkest setting, might be why.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's a dark Grey with some cool tones.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Look at the bottom of #8 near the door. I think the last few images are just washed out. It's the blue vs white dress all over again.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nup, it looks gross as fuck

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Controversial opinion alert: I don't like hard wood. I much prefer carpet in every room except the bathroom and kitchen.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

I'm surprised how unpopular carpet is. I love it

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

sound insulation. Nothing worse than people stomping above you on hard wood

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's just like, your opinion, man.

6 years ago | Likes 94 Dislikes 5

That rug brought the room together, don’t you think?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well, it’s sort of following modern trends. I personally think it’s great, but the question is: is it timeless? That’s what I go for usually

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I think that was intended as a Big Lebowski quote/gag

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No joke.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

Not just you. That with the almost "hospital green" walls are not particularly inviting.

6 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 15

Hospitals haven’t been green for many many decades; at least not where I live (USA)

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

The nursing home I worked in was that color. Was awful.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

No doubt! Yeesh.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

How is that grey?

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a 3rd woodworker, completely agree!

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I was just about to say the exact same thing. Maybe a sort of honey colour stain would have been better?

6 years ago | Likes 244 Dislikes 15

Oh gosh not honey colored!

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Most hardwood floors look best with yellow to red hues.

6 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

My wife picked it out, and before doing it I thought the same thing, but it ended up looking so good, and we have a gray laminate in the

6 years ago | Likes 105 Dislikes 2

other room so it flows really well

6 years ago | Likes 98 Dislikes 2

Can you return it?

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Coincidentally that's what your dad asked your mom when she came home with you from the hospital.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I think contrast between the light walls and dark floor looks great. Amazing transformation!

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I think it looks great

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

The amount of grit used took the natural color away, shame. But glad it’s not a blood stained carpet.

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 7

Nah, heavier grits reveal the natural colour underneath. What you saw before was aging or whatever previous coating. Source: I work my wood.

6 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

So do I, but women get creeped out when I tell them about it.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Will you work MY wood?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wow. There's no need to making this dirty.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Theres a reason carpet was put down over hardwood, the sound deadening and the carpet reduces dust and hair in the air for allergies but 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 22

Carpet is a nightmare for allergies

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

In my country the government and doctors recommend against full carpet especially due to dust and allergens. Hardwood is so much better.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Carpet is horrible for allergies. If you have asthma or allergies the first thing a doc will tell you is get rid of your carpets.

6 years ago | Likes 72 Dislikes 2

What are you talking about? The wood floors in my house gather dust and dirt 3x as much as the carpet floors. I only sneeze in my wood rooms

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Carpet traps dust, debris and micro organisms. Hardwood doesn’t “gather dust” your house gets dusty. Sweep then swiffer your hard wood=0dust

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

If you vacuum your hardwood instead your just being lazy and kicking up a good amount of dust to fall back again.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I do sweep and mop my hardwood every other week. Doesn’t change the fact that it gets way dustier in there and the dust gets more airborne.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Nuh uh. Carpet makes dust

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 4

But not allergens.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

It traps in dust and allergens in the area, making it harder to get rid of.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You need a dictionary

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why do you think that?

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

To look up allergens

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Im a fan of hardwood floors with large area rugs as the best of both worlds

6 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 3

Yeah, carpets are great for general insulation and comfort, but fuck if they aren't a pain to keep clean and a terror of liquids.

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Also carpets helping with allergies? That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

RIGHT? That is the exact opposite of what I believe to be the truth.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The carpets trap allergens rather then allowing them to stir every time someone walks through the good.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Carpets don’t trap allergens they collect them

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Carpet acts as a filter. Like any other filter it will need to be cleaned regularly and properly to continue to function as such.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Carpet reduces dust?

6 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 5

Wrong, still.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"the use of carpets is linked to increased levels of indoor dusts, allergens, and microorganisms"

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Tldr me please

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Obviously, more sources of dust which is anything from hair, cloth lint, carpet shards, shedded skin, fallen out hair etc.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Directly from the conclusion: "the use of carpets is linked to increased levels of indoor dusts, allergens, and microorganisms"

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because it's so hard to vacuum hardwood to get rid of dust. Also, carpet or shoes, fckn pick one.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 7

The idea is the carpet traps the allergens rather then them being kicked up each time.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Until it adds up to you not breathing anymore. I get the idea, it was flawed and didn't work. Mopping traps allergens and REMOVES them.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You don't vacuum wood floors... you sweep and mop... ever pulled up carpet and seen how disgusting it is under there?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Had to pull my carpet after I kept getting sinus infections and was diagnosed with bronchitis. Never want carpet ever again.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm Swedish and basically everyone vacuums wood floor, which exist in most homes. under carpets is no exception. 2 Mop and put carpet back.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't know about the vacuums where you live, but ours has been designed for wood floors for decades.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You vacuum, then mop.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0
