If we even have them, i wonder what the olympics would be like in 20-30 years

Do not forget that dope industry has also been progressing

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow, not sure how to react...a graphic illustration of "simpler times",

The vault on the right is referred to as a Hecht Vault. It is still available to do though it is only worth 2.0 -meaning a max score of 12.0

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

TIL in 1932 I could've won the olympics

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So true

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What do you guys think the Olympics will be like in another 56 years?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is it only me that realised they're 80 years apart and not 56?

Professional athletes were originally disqualified from the Olympics. It was all amateur competitors, regular dudes.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I want to see the comparisons to the first or second year pros were allowed in

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ya well, you know..now they have springboards n coaches n shit. Back then they only had backyards and rocks. And they liked it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Olympics were created to be just a bunch of average joes getting together to celebrate not-war. Nowadays, well, just look to Russia...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just imagine going back in time 50 years and doing something remotely close to today and people freaking out.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

we're evolving

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I see OP is from Nebraska. I too am from Nebraska.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"The greatest generation" sucked at sports, TIL.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So, all I can say is 1) different equipment 2)the 'then' weren't full time athletes.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Personally speaking, it's not better to watch, but more realistic of the human experience. Instead of just going for performance.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Gotta start somewhere.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

How did that woman survive the radiation in vault 84? SHE'S A GHOUL, GHOULS CAN'T COMPETE IN THE OLYMPICS

Ghoulympics

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I just did the 1932 men's vault onto my sofa. I feel very olympic.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, this was my best of 10. I don't feel very Olympic. http://imgur.com/NGs59M5

Yesterday's Olympic gymnastics is today's amateur parkour.

Beginner parkour even

come on guys that was 2012, this is up to date

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa I'm out

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why why did I watch this. I knew what was gonna happen but I didn't look away.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

To be fair, Olympians used to be normal people living normal lives that came together for sport, not spending a life-time training.

9 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 1

Exactly, they weren't professional athletes either

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Now someone do it with figure skating! -a figure skater

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Are people still trying to argue gymnastics isn't a real sport? Being an Olympic gymnast today is like having a super power.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Uhh, no. No one mentioned that

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In my opinion it shouldn't be considered a sport due to the fact that is subjective. They are incredible athletes though. 1/

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have HUGE respect for gymnasts and watch it every Olympics. That being said, many people have an issue with calling something that's 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Where's the bar for "subjective"? Points and deductions are all standardized.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What constitutes a "deduction" is definitely subjective, by definition. There's criteria but the criteria is a judgement call.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

subjectively judged a "sport". It doesn't diminish the talent and skill required to do it though-what they do is incredible. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Someone should change this to the guy who broke his leg

9 years ago | Likes 60 Dislikes 9

You, I like you!

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Wasn't there a girl too a while back (don't know if it was waaaay back or couple yrs back) who broke her leg but finished the routine?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1996, Kerri Strug. Torn ligaments not broken, but still. And she didn't just finish, she actually performed a whole second vault.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And then had to crawl off the mat because the vault wouldn't count if she didn't leave the mat on her own.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep. After standing literally just about long enough to qualify. Took some serious guts.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I know I wouldn't be able to do it! Some said her coach threatened her, but I think she just had some serious guts and drive!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Source? I missed this

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I would also like to see this for some ungodly reason

Wait?! Was this fucking today?!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The medical team appears to be wearing Rio 2016 shirts so I believe so but I obviously didn't see it live

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

well the 1932 guy didn't have a spring board...or a mat to land on?

9 years ago | Likes 325 Dislikes 11

still god damn impressive

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Or flippyfloopy arms that bend in weird places.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

they did have a springboard. The equipment wasnt as good however theres no denying the skill has improved drastically. Its honed training

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

Olympics also used to be amateurs only if i remember correctly

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I think I can see a springboard between the front too legs. Looks less springy though

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And his Superman was amazing. Just perfectly flat and such a smooth jump.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It's actually called a Hecht Vault.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Are you asking or telling?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was making a statement but inflecting it like a question? because I was unsure?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Springboard, yes. Mat, no

9 years ago | Likes 79 Dislikes 4

not a lot of spring in that board

9 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 45

Or in the gymnast.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

he seems to jump off something, not sure what though.

9 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 5

its a springboard

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Mini trampoline maybe?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

looks like a little ramp

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

its a springboard

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

oh I thought that was the shadow of the vault thingy

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

idk i thought it moved when he jumped....THE ILLUSIONS OF THE PAST

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I think you are right it looks like some sort of board... doesn't spring alot tho

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

either way I could never have been an Olympian

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey man, where you from?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That is a huge splash

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

forget about the flips look at the splashes look how small we got them now days

9 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 0

how?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Working out optimum angles of entry and how to get your body into that position.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

you have to enter perfectly perpendicular to the water at point of impact make sure your body goes through the hole you punch with yourhands

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

plus I think they found the optimal hand position to open up space for your body but not cause a splash

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Technology really is amazing

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

The splashes are so small since they replaced the water with dihydrogen monoxide.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Technique... technology would be things. technique would be improved actions.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I admit it wasn't a very a good joke, but twas a joke nonetheless.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I got a slightly harder breath out of my nose from it anyway +1
