....... Why am I wondering if this image is AI now?

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

No! (Russian: Нет!) a 1954 anti-alcohol poster by Viktor Govorkov.

Throughout the existence of the Soviet Union, a number of extensive anti-alcohol campaigns were carried out. The most serious campaigns were those of 1918-1923, 1929, 1958, 1972, and 1985-1990. This poster doesn't fit neatly into one of these major anti-drinking campaigns, and yet is utterly iconic due to its clear, simple message and somewhat risible imagery.

Believe it or not, imgurians also used to frown on political posts. That was quite a while ago.

2 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 5

Oh yeah I used to get yelled at for my name for being political. Like bro, I'm not even american.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't mind political posts per se. It's important to be shared so maybe people vote. But I don't live in America nor am I an American citizen so when the political filter isn't working I still see way too many of them.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 4

I think the big issue is that we come on here as an escape and we don't like having to deal with it in our little dopamine bubbles, especially when most of the political posts are biased and hateful.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wouldn't mind if people tagged their posts as political so I wouldn't see it.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

Yep. People act like it's MAGA Russian bots asking for it but no I'm a progressive who is voting for Harris come November. I'm 100% decided and I try to avoid politics to prevent myself from getting needlessly worked up over something I can't do anymore about. But if they aren't tagged I see them, and if I see them I end up reading them.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've been downvoted before simply for suggesting that.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

I'll Upvote you. I come on the internet to escape political garbage, I don't care which side it's on.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Then we realized how precarious our entire civilization was and how close to a total removal of democracy we got in 2021.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

People hate political posts, when their team is losing, and likes them when their team is winning.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 19

Given that the majority of people on imgur aren't from the US and almost every political post is american - they aren't even our teams.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Question: I'm assembling a post exploring the ethics of AI "prompt jockeys" stealing/copying EACH OTHER'S "intellectual property," and asking if that term can even *apply* to AI images. (Essentially, it's Vizzini saying, "You're trying to kidnap what I've rightfully stolen.")

If I include *examples* of the AI images that were copied / infringed, would the post be downvoted for that? (Then again, it might be worth it. I'm doing this for the comments / discussion, not the points.)

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't hold me to this, but I don't think you'd be downvoted for that. The way I see it 'no AI images' is more about those low-effort posts with a few random vaguely interesting images and no coherent story. If you label them as AI images, and use them to say something interesting, I at least would upvote.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Imagine being so petty that you wouldn't let others enjoy making their own versions of stuff you've put out there. As a matter of fact, where I frequent you have a "Remix" button, but other sites have it too. It instantly loads in everything it took to make the image in question, the model, extensions, prompt, settings, etc, so that you can adjust things as you see fit.

None of that "Mine mine mine" mentality.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's precisely the attitude I wanted to question. To sum up, I'm very concerned about the ethical use of AI. That's why I *don't* overproduce, I make only images in a sub-genre that (AFAIK) no *human* artists are producing, and ZERO money changes hands because of my hobby. So it rankles me to see my stuff co-opted by someone who breaks all 3 of those rules, and apparently doesn't give a damn about ethics. (1 of 2)

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As (hopefully) a help to D&D DMs, I commission non-Human commoners; fantasy races doing perfectly normal jobs. I also post the *prompts* I used, so the DMs can alter them to fit their game. And along comes somebody who *copies* the prompts, changes 2 or 3 words in each one, runs it through a *paid* AI engine, and CHARGES MONEY for them.
Here's my Half-Orc cloth merchant, for free, and his "Remix", for $4.
https://imgur.com/OmAB4HO

I say this is for-profit plagiarism. What's *your* take on it?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, when money starts changing hands, it becomes more difficult. I understand wanting to keep others from monetizing something that should be free.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pressed enter a bit too fast. Thing is, I think it's fighting a losing battle, really not much to be done. Also, it's likely a very short lived issue, as AI becomes more prolific, just about no one will be able to make money off of it.

The only thing you can really do is see if the site they sell on has a report function, but even the entire concept of "they stole my prompt" is extremely iffy to begin with.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just post interesting, novel, weird and entertaining things that interest you and you'll do fine here.

If it's something you're not being transparent about being AI or you're claiming it to be yours and/or making profits off of it? Absolutely not. There's the door. But if it's to show its advancements on the medical and other fields or just to make shitposts, things that are already made out of recycled content without permission with no intent to claim as creator or profits from? Go right on ahead. Make all the wizard memes you want.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Oh I’m clear it’s AI art when I post it, and I don’t make money over AI art either, but with the generations I have, I certainly could, for example, put them on T-shirts/posters and make some money because there’s nothing like the art that I’ve had AI make. Really, art is exactly what you make it, whether it is made by hand or made on a computer. The only difference between AI art and fractals, for example, is only the amount of mathematics that produces both. That’s literally it. And…

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Fractals ARE considered works of art, even though humans don’t manually create them, and they’re plastered everywhere, no one ever was up
In arms about it, nobody should be now like they are with AI. Heck, even Andy Warhol created artwork out of soup can labels, something a company created, and it’s considered art. He didn’t claim to have made the labels, everyone knows that was Campbells. So it doesn’t matter who or what made it as long as the implementation is interesting, just like all art.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

There is a difference between drawing a subject and copying. What Warhol did was no different than someone who's looking at a landscape to paint it in their own style. He did not look at other's art. He did not analyze it to see what the common pattern was and decided to follow the same formula because he wanted to make it big and get rich like everyone else. He studied a subject and painted it. What you're saying is ignorant at best and disrepectful at worst. Please take some art classes.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You should try doing actual traditional art by hand for half your life before you make such a claim about AI generators. You would've offended yourself. All AI does is break down preexisting works made by actual artists and copies the pattern it recognizes. If you ask anyone if it's okay to copy something but change it enough so you can't tell what the source is, they'd still tell you it's lazy and inspiration-less. AI isn't art. It's soulless.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This is exactly what human artists do FFS. Stop gate keeping art. It's a tool, let people enjoy it.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

ah shit and we lost him guys. He sees AI art the same as real art. Damn.

2. Vigorously upvote on Halloween
3. Downvote or ignore on Christmas (leave a polite comment to explain the new regime if you're polite)
In a few years, it will stick.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

The no selfie rule only applies to normal looking people. And imgur loves its pg-13 porn.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hate them on Christmas!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would say a costumed picture isn't quite a selfie. All up for sharing pictures of dress up, but not the glamor photo that most selfies try to be.

2 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 4

This, a selfie is meant to brag about your personal appearance. A costume showcase shows of the costume, the person just happens to need to wear it at the same time for the full effect.

Same goes for armor, 3D printed prosthetics, and the occasional gear

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I'm all for people doing whatever the shit they want and letting the point system sort it out. that's what it's there for...we don't need "rules" on top of that anymore. too many people have said "wanted to post a selfie as part of this thing I'm very happy about but didn't want to get downvoted" ... ease up, guys

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 19

see guys, look. the point system works. you don't need to make another rule about not talking shit about all your weird internet rules now

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 7

There are rules, Donnie. This isn't 'Nam.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

There are like three steps that stop this place from turning into a second Instagram. No selfies is the most important one of these rules.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

I'd say the community is the most important thing keeping imgur from turning into instagram, especially when the community can exert control on content with a vote system, which instagram doesn't have. I mean don't get me wrong, I'm not going to make this a righteous cause or anything, it's just weird. especially for a community that insists it's against gatekeeping

but look, if you think reposting these rules from 2011 on LNI is all that's keeping this place from going to hell, you do you

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

That community is more important than no selfies is true, I give you that. Being a community isn't a rule tho, so there's that.

Also, I live in Europe. My LNI is your daylight Imgur, and your LNI is my morning hours xD

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I mean, "no selfies" isn't a rule either. If people said "remember rule 1 of imgur: be a community and don't be a dick," that's a way better rule than "NO SELFIES!" I'd be 100% down for that unofficial rule.

And yeah, I tend to fall into calling it LNI even knowing that. But I think a big part of what turns it into LNI for me is more personal than time based...if I'm looking at imgur late, it's because I can't sleep and I end up clicking through more and getting deeper down into the weird shit

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Definitely better than Christmas. I need a break on Christmas, I don't want to see people's flesh prisons.

2 years ago | Likes 264 Dislikes 11

The only problem I have with halloween selfies is that it starts week before and lasts week after. Christmas selfies are two days, and blocking the tag removes the vast of the posts.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Yeah christmas selfie is lame. Show me your costumes!

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Perhaps it would be a good day to see their skeletons?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

then you need to stop doing what you do for Christmas. that is not even the point of the Santa Claus Corporate Christmas™. If it is such a burden for you, you need to change that day.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 34

No, you. Except change your whole self.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Oooooo burn. Yeah, never mind me, stay miserable.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

If you, let's say, don't have a family to celebrate with on Christmas and sit alone in your tiny overpriced flat with an eggnog, "changing the day" isn't as simple as you make it out to be.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

I never said it would be easy, just that if the day is torture for you, don't do it. If you have no family, and sit in your tiny apartment alone with eggnog go to volunteer at a homeless shelter for Christmas dinner, find a therapist and figure out why you are wallowing alone with eggnog. Never promised simple, that's on you, change is often hard, but sticking it out in a rutt, that's on you.
