I'm so torn up about this

Little bit of story time for context I guess. Both of my best friends have lived in Brooklyn their whole lives, and still live with their parents. I moved here from the Bronx, and have always had to deal with roommates and that kind of shit. Right now with a particular roommate it's really bad, he's a fuckin hoarder. The less said about it the better. But he's been here for 10 years, so they rent has barely budged. It's all I can afford without going into really dangerous neighborhoods. Regardless, I gave my 30 days notice on June 1st that I'm moving out, without knowing where I'll go from here.

Right before the pandemic my parents emptied their house so it could be renovated, and moved into a room in a neighbor's house. Good for them, cus that house is old and slanted and drafty. Then pandemic hits and they're just stuck. Everything is in storage, they've torn out as much as was legal without permits, and now they don't know even when the building permits will arrive. They've got their own shit going on, right now I can't turn to them for help. I've done that plenty of times before too, it's played out.

Then I finally get the good word, my request to work remotely for good was approved. I've been looking at a place in Wilmington, NC. 1 bedroom apartment, they got a pool, fitness center, grilling area, DOG PARK. All for 200/month more than what I'm paying for a room in a shared apartment over a coffee shop. And it's on the ocean. My only dream is to be able to go sailing.

But I won't know anyone. No friends close by. No visiting parents on the weekend. I'll miss them so much and it feels so selfish.

Do it for two years, save every penny, then buy a house somewhere.

Wanting to improve your life is not selfish. Your friends and family want you to be happy. Good luck!

Why move all the way to NC? There's got to be some affordable places just outside NYC that are comparable.

I'm looking into it. Most studios are just out of my budget but I've sent my info to the few in reach.

Welcome to adulting. Members of your older family have also "gone it alone" at one point or another in order for you to be here.

There are affordable homes out there - especially in the Midwest, but some folks like the freedom of renting.

so long as my budget doesn't change much, I'm able to put away money for a down payment
