We had people stay long past closing, we started vacuuming and putting the chairs on the tables and they still didn't get the hint.

They probably did and just didn't care. People are entitled dicks sometimes.

Gremlynn4023
Was awful in fast food. Doors close at ten, drive thru still open. People come in and grab a table at 9:55. I can't ask them to leave /1

Cafe I worked at, hot food stopped at 1800, closed at 1900, staff had to be out by 1915. Not allowed to clean until customers are gone.
Can't ask them to leave, have to explain to management why we have to stay late, can't not clean. Cleaning takes 45min anyway.
Well, 45min to do a half-decent job. Then management wonder why the place isn't spotlessly clean in the morning.
Dining room closer isn't allowed to vacuum whilke guests are in the building. Still has to leave at 10:30. Gotta squeeze vacuum in with /2
All the drive through and kitchen closing duties. Don't get out until half past time to clock out. Get yelled at next day for leaving late
Welcome to chain or corporate food service. You're fired. Last check is in the mail. Not being a dick just kidding. I live your life too.

Could be like the crappy restaurant where I live. "Open" till 11, stops letting people in at 9, stops serving at 9:30, staff leaves 9:45.
We have places around us where if you ask when they stop serving, they say "it depends on business." So it could be 8, it could be 11.

Chairs are on unoccupied tables by 8:30

Depends if the definition of closing is 'no longer taking tables' or 'gtfo'

*door is locked 30 min after the sign says we close* people still want to be let in since they see customers inside.
PanicAtTheCostco
Restaurants aren't stores so you can't really have a "gtfo" time considering they normally let paying customers take all the time they need
Yeah we do. We're not going to ask you to leave until maybe 15/20 minutes after closing. But we make sure everyone who comes in in the 1/2
last 2 hours we're open is aware of when we close so they can decide whether or not that gives them enough time 2/2

I wish restaurants would post both times (like "we stop seating at 9, close the doors at 10")
Could just assume that you should give leeway to any business at least a half hour before closing.
I do, but many don't and it would be nice to clear up what the closing time means so waitstaff don't have to stay later than they should
Agreed but regardless no staff in a restaurant can leave until everything is stocked and cleaned so shift ends when everything is done
Where I work we do. In that we have our opening times and clearly state 'we stop taking tables an our before closing'.
Used to be a waitress. We did we put closing time of the kitchen and the restaurant its self online and a sign on the door doesn't stop them
iwanttomountndewya
