Living with an alcoholic

Aug 6, 2022 11:12 PM

I watched this first about 2 weeks ago and it fucking sucker punched my shit. My spouse is an alcoholic and I've been in basically this exact same scenario hundreds of times. It literally kills you to see them killing themselves like this.

If anyone is in the beginning stages of a relationship with an addict, my advice to you is that you will never be good enough to change them. At best you can cushion their fall with your mind and body, over and over again, but you will never change them. You will break yourself trying to save them but you will never make them into someone that they are not; only they can choose to be better. It might hurt to leave them to their own devices, but it's like trying to rescue someone who's drowning. You have to throw them a lifesaver; if you try to save them directly they're just going to pull you under with them.

Tuca and Bertie. It was on Netflix, Netflix cancelled it, and then Cartoon Network picked it up. You can watch it on HBO Max also.

12 step programs especially ones rooted in "finding a higher power" have the lowest success rates among rehabilitation options.

The most successful options are ones that pair one on one sessions with a licensed therapist coupled with a medication regiment.

That would be ideal, but they have to want to change for anything to work at all.
