That's going to be an adjustment for sure. Good luck, OP - hopefully you already have some connections in place in Ireland to help smooth the transition.
Yes, but I don't know if they are moving to the same area they are from, and I'm also not assuming that they left with contacts in place that they managed to maintain these past 4 years.
What I like about this is that as an EU citizen, OP can simply move to Malta and start living and working there, and after four years simply move back to Ireland, and that's pretty much all there is to it. I think Malta has a requirement to get a local ID card after three months. I am so used to moving freely across borders in Europe that having to apply in advance for permission to enter a country always feels outrageous.
The coverage & standard are roughly the same across all countries. Visitors are covered like residents (i.e., home transport must usually be covered separately). If you decide to take up residence, you're covered like other citizens from day one.
what is there to "sink in"? Europeans are generally aware that the US is a big patch of land and well... yes, you can move within your own country. So can any citizen of most countries in the world. This was about the freedom to just move between 27 different countries. No point in comparing this, and its not a competition either.
"Sinks in" isn't really the right term. Do people know that the US is one country? Yes. It's not really the kind of revelation that needs to sink in. The point isn't moving around inside one country; it's more about moving around between different countries.

Somebody has a thing for small island countries.
Youhavinagiraffe
ROI technically isn't an Island country since it has a land border with Northern Ireland

Ireland is not a small country lol
MadamPuddifoot
Have you ever seen a map? Ireland is very much a small country. It's smaller than many US states.
CinnamonBunny
70k km2? Pretty small on my books.
FatBoobsDontCount
Look at Mr. 71km2 books here
5050Saint
Of the 190ish countries in the world, Ireland is smaller than about 140 of them. That does feel small.
FatBoobsDontCount
It's not small it's just that the water is cold up here ok?!

How does health insurance work when you move countries in EU?
giraffinator
There's a European EHIC card for EU citizens for care in diff countries, alternatively have travel insurance or local private insurance
ebonyfaery
Look up EHIC
modemjockey5772
Basically, you get yourself a European Health Card that sends any charges to your national Health system.

The appeal is small distance with easy access to live/work in multiple countries with tonnes of history, culture, languages, way of life etc

That's nice. It's not really on the same topic, but it's good to see your enthusiasm to join in.
