You can actually save things from breaking by giving them a kick. Shifting downward motion to lateral so it'll slide instead of smash

I've slowed my phone multiple times this way. Gravity might be a harsh mistress but inertia is a Bitch.
I do it all the time. It might have saved us a couple of concussions. (My kids are on the clumsy side...)
And I don't *kick* them in the head... it's just that my feet are closer and softer than the floor.
