Just got into D&D this past year and looking to expand my resources.

So far I have the Players Handbook, Dungeon Masters Guide, and Monster Manual. As I understand it most books beyond that contain additional classes, races, and campaigns. I feel I have a good grasp at constructing a basic campaign for homebrews which I am more inclined towards. So which books would experienced players recommend for additional player classes and races? I'm less concerned about campaigns and items as I am far better at creating those than balancing races/classes.

Thanks in advance for the help.

And yes 5th Edition. Sorry I should have specified.

Volo's guides are good.

Grab sourcebooks from other systems and translate what you like into AD&D. GURPS made great sourcebooks in the second shittiest system ever.

I know nothing of D&D except Imgur memes but I'm thinking Dragonborn. I hear that can be a class. Something to chew on perhaps

A great resource for seeing what each book adds is DnD beyond. In the character pages it will also tell you what books you need to make ...

A specific class or race.

All/any the official books and/or the unearthed arcana

The best by far is Xanathar’s Guide to Everything. Tasha’s Cauldron is a runner up.

Xanathars has 30 subclasses, cool spells, a “this is your life” section for creating character backgrounds, and a ton of names to use.

I've been playing since '82, my favorite character so far is a half elf monk/war priest.

My current character idea is a Half-Orc Vengeance Paladin.

No reason not to try it!

Since you are playing D&D and not one of bajillion tabletop RPG variants, can we assume you are trying for a classic experience?

My weak point is I don't have the patience to think about balance unguided. Like making an encounter the challenge rating is a HUGE help>

I'm assuming 5th edition. Tasha's Cauldron of Everything really changes everything up and adds a lot to the game. The modules add races.

Uh stupid question what do you mean by module? Is that something different than the books?

Xanathar's Guide and Sword Coast's Adventurer's Guide also add quite a lot of flavor; options for progression and how things work.

This is a great resource it has everything for free to read: https://5etools-mirror-1.github.io/index.html The main site currently down.

Modules are the adventures in 5th edition: Descent into Avernus, Hoard of the Dragon Queen, Princes of the Apocalypse, etc.

Ah ok so campaign books add more races as opposed to say expanded rule books like the Cauldron of Eveything someone mentioned?

They add all sorts of things, even spells. I recommend Matt Colville on YouTube and the MCDM Arcadia books for stuff. Not official books.
