This is baby Leafcrunch. I love him.

About 5 days old now, fat ass.

9 days old, fat fatty fatso.

He got so fat that he decided to fix himself to the lid so he would never have to move again from lazy fatness.

Sorry for potato - I watched him for 3 hours and he waited until I took a 3 minute bathroom break to transform into a chrysalis. Typical.

I live in SWFL - He emerged about an hour after I returned to my home to assess the damage from Irma

Drying and stretching his new wings (By the way, he is a girl!)

She is almost ready to fly - Been hanging for about 2 hours. (Photobomb by baby caterpillar down bottom and top right)

Leafcrunch is all ready to go. She hopped off my finger, walked across my face and then took off. Hopefully she will return to my milkweed plants and lay eggs. If you guys like this - I have about 9 more chrysalis and 20 caterpillars still crunching away I could document.

This week sucked ass. Had to put my dog down 4 days before evacuating and hunkering down for Irma, praying my house was still standing. The eye went right over us! (Ft Myers) It was scary but I am thankful that everything is okay. (And yes, I evacuated with all of my caterpillars, lol. I had 4 jars and 2 tanks in my back seat filled with plants and caterpillars, as well as my cat in the front seat) This butterfly emerging today really lifted my spirits. THANKS FOR READING AND SHIT.

I can't comprehend how much they change from a big worm to a majestic creature with wings.

Monarchs are an extremely troubled species, and taking care of a few until adulthood is immensely helpful to their populations. Good on you.

I feel you on that missing the chrysalis-making action! I've raised Spicebush Swallowtails the past two years & missed it every time!

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

EVERY TIME - I miss them emerging too, by seconds.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

That's awesome. I did this too when I was younger. Glad you and yours are safe after the hurricane <3

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nope - Took them all this morning. Similar maybe

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I do, too! Different captions, same pics.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I took them all this morning when he emerged, so you couldnt have. I can provide proof if you need it.. lol

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Maybe this helps? Went to my pic in the gallery and clicked details (on phone). I can provide pics of the empty chrysalis with my name (1/2)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

as well if that helps settle your doubts.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ok sorry

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is pretty near a perfect post! There's a story, good pics, a current events reference (a personal one - bonus!), bugs, no politics!

<3 I wish you peace and for the sweet memories of your pup to bring a smile to your face.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So sorry about your pupper, hoping he lived a good longish life? I'm hugging my two old curmudgeon pups extra. So sorry

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

He was 10, we thought he had another 5 years. It was unexpected. Thought it was a belly ache, turned out to be cancer. :(

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

So sorry :( it's just not fair, I know too well. Sending love, hugs and good vibes your way. Time heals all wounds

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I hope so. I miss him so much - the empty space next to my feet in bed is the worst.

As I was scrolling I got so excited to tell you Leafcrunch was a girl that I didn't notice you'd mentioned that until I'd typed a comment!

8 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 0

Nice job raising her, I'm sorry for the loss of your pup.

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Haha, you know she is a girl, therefore you also know I had no way to know until she emerged! I love naming them, and adjusting said names.

8 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

How do you know if it's a girl or a boy?

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Male monarchs have a dark spot on each hindwing! The dark spots produce pheromones that help them attract a lady like Ms. Leafcrunch :)

8 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

Thanks. Had no idea!
