Drivers
I don't even think it should include parallel parking. It should just be generalĀ things, like looking both ways before you pull into traffic, or what that turn signal does.

asmallcat
Everyone under 65 fucking thinks this.
destinoz
Elderly drivers are statistically less likely to be involved in accidents than young people.
gluttonygreedpridewrathslothlustenvy
Downvote. Not even a slightly unpopular opinion.
pointynosefaggot
we have this in norway.. atleast something similar.
kennedy9164
They dont bury old people anymore...they just put them in a car, and point it south.
FarmerFrance
Should include being able to drive at least 3/4 of the speed posted on the sign
WellYouKnowThatsJustLikeYourOpinionMan
This would save lives. Source: I live in a small Beach town in Florida where all the old people come to die
SidneyHarbor
On the bright side, Audi, Tesla, and others are saying they are within a few years of fully self driving cars, so this won't matter for long
OGdaddy
"Sounds good, if kids under thirty have to take the same test." - An old guy, probably.

I was in an accident a few weeks ago where a driver thought a stop sign was a green light. He was born in 1933.......
torillatavataan
In Finland you need to renew your licence every few yrs when you get 70; you need a doctor's statement, which can also order a driving test.
Arianni
How about 45?
TemporaryUzername
my bro says this every time my father drives him somewhere due to him being blind as a mole rat with the attention span of a plastic bag.
TheMeats
Or fucking looking behind them when they back up. Side mirrors are useless for that you daft cunts. Or going 10 km under the posted limit.
dohcohv
Or double the limit in a school zone, or driving through crosswalks narrowly missing people.
TheMeats
Or suddenly tearing in front of you at an intersection or roundabout
lawideas
Many US states have this. Arizona, for one.
SidneyHarbor
Same thing I was going to say. https://www.dmv.com/az/arizona/senior-drivers
enemyofmost
FLORIDA NEEDS THIS! These old bastards are dangerously unaware.
slickdickricktherockskippingchampionoftheworld
god damn New Yorkers!
ifyouareacuntanyouknowitclapyourflaps
I'd rather see everyone have to pass a small test every so often. Say every 5 years. Hit 60, every two. Hit 70 every year.
Dispari
Sounds great. DMVs are already overpacked and understaffed. Let's septuple their workload!
ifyouareacuntanyouknowitclapyourflaps
People having to pay for the tests more often would help. Or less people would drive therefore helping environment. Win win
hearthstoneaccount9
more people taking tests = more revenue for government = improved DMVs, its not really rocket science and people shouldn't be driving anyway

Statistically, (male) drivers under 25 are faaaaar more likely to have accidents than seniors.
overthereoverhere
I don't dispute that, but to be a terrible driver doesn't mean you necessarily get into accidents.
oiamo123
Honestly I don't see guys so much getting into accidents, but more so getting speeding tickets etc
SidneyHarbor
Plus death stats are skewed - over 80 get in a lot of fatal wrecks, but >80 yo's are much more physically fragile than 16-18 yo's.
FPB94
Yeah. Male drivers under 25 drive A LOT MORE than seniors. Mile for mile Seniors are dangerous.
ElBivo
I don't think that is quantifiable but perhaps drivers under 25 should have a road test every thousand miles they drive?
HsuDoNihm
Nifty stats Pg. 5; deaths by age and miles driven. 25-29 ~ 80-84 https://www.aaafoundation.org/sites/default/files/2012OlderDriverRisk.pdf
HsuDoNihm
It gets worse at the extreme ends of age (young/old) but young are worse, overall than old.
britishdownunder
Or have compolsory testing(at least written) every 10 years and have actual tests at 20, 35, 45, 50 years from getting the licence.
Allofyoush
Imagine the consequences at the DMV
killlatwix
This makes a lot more sense. No one can claim "ageism".
digitalist1
Ya but you kinda need a license at 20 35 45 50 and 60 for your job...
KingDonaldJTrump
I would go as far as 6 or 7. People forget the rules, and pick up bad habits.
only90skidswillgetthis
One extra trip to the DMV every 10 years is too much bruh
Texantioch
I've gone every year cause I always forget to update my registration on time.
LokeGroundrunner
Every time you renew your license you should have to take a test
InkyBlinkyPinkyAndClyde
This is what we need. Plenty of younger people out there with no idea what they're doing behind the wheel. Right now it's set up so that /1
InkyBlinkyPinkyAndClyde
if you can just pass once, you have your license for life. It's messed up. /2
Martecles
In Utah I believe it's every five years, and I see accidents about twice a week.
corneliusgansevoort
Certain people would call that government overreach, no matter how many lives it saved.
healthherbally
Stop making sense. Stop. It.
SerialKitten666
How about you just have to take another drivers exam every time you have to renew your license? And photo updates shouldn't be optional
ilikecheeseburgers
When your license expires and you have to renew, why not make them prove that they know and can act on the knowledge with a quick test?
britishdownunder
And then at 5 year incrimints unless doctors suggest more frequently.
WilliamHuskerAdama
Imagine how much extra work that'll require.
DonnaNobleInTheLibrary
Truckers and bus drivers already have to do that in Germany. And I'm sure optometrists would love if you had to re-take those tests.
JustFuckingWatchCowboyBebop
They have to renew their licenses in several states anyway. A road test takes about 30 minutes. Make the test taker pay $10 and you're fine.
WilliamHuskerAdama
It'd be better to adopt the Scandinavian system then, and actually learn to drive. We spend a lot more time learning, much more scrutiny.
JustFuckingWatchCowboyBebop
I agree. Most other countries require 2-3 times what America does or more to get a license.
Hippiegaia
or germany
thee933
In Arizona our licence expires at 65 and you have to retake the driving test to get a new one.
ImJustASalad
Do you like the new licenses? I think they look too good, I like the goofy ones before these.
CrimsonNirnr00t
My dad turns 65 this year & we were all wondering what he even has to do. No one has ever made it there before! We live in AZ, too.
TheDouche
If you're claiming your dad is the first Arizonian over 65 with a legal driver license, I call bullshit.
muhvitus
In His family probably
Inconspicuouscomment
It was ruled unconstitutional when proposed due to age based descrimination
StillNotYouTube
Doesn't make sense when there is mandatory retirement for some government employees (military, judges and federal agents), pilots and ATC's.
SidneyHarbor
AZ requires vision test ever 12 years until age 65, then it's required every 5 years. https://www.dmv.com/az/arizona/senior-drivers
CrimsonNirnr00t
That's weird.. I live in AZ and I've been driving for 30 years and I haven't taken a vision test..
SidneyHarbor
Really? I had to when I had my photo updated. Maybe they just skipped you if you look young still or something.
CrimsonNirnr00t
Oh. I typed that the wrong way. I AM 30 years old, been driving for 15. Sorry. Still, should've had one by now.
SidneyHarbor
Have you updated your photo? That's what triggered it for me, I hit the 12 year mark.
dhulqarnayn
People of that age vote in large numbers. Do you vote?
FranzimBaxterheinen
Even after they die
dhulqarnayn
only in Chicago
nanyatenyaa
They vote in large numbers because the baby boomer generation is, physically larger than the others....
Softcreamybeige
Only 19% of 18 to 29 votes..... if everyone in the bracket voted you could argue we'd have a different president
overthereoverhere
Yes...I canvased, phone banked, donated, held signs at voting station and provided rides for people to the poles this year too.
WallpaperProblems
The North or South?

bahahhaa Nice.
tinnerz58
What the fuck does that have to do with driving ability? Go on, I'll wait
DonnaNobleInTheLibrary
No politician will suggest a law like because that'd mean they'd all vote against him.
tinnerz58
So like I said, it has no relevance to driving ability? Cool. It may have bearing on the suggested law but not on the reasoning behind it!
DonnaNobleInTheLibrary
It has relevance to TESTING their driving ability.
tinnerz58
Which I didn't even mention so.....
sirrichardbottoms
AARP has a presence in the political system because many of their members vote. Try and pass a law against the elderly and you lose votes.
tinnerz58
So nothing? Cool, yeah I though not
FranzimBaxterheinen
Ha! Still waiting?
tinnerz58
It's only been 7mins but yes
FranzimBaxterheinen
He answered you. Old people love to vote. It's like voting out welfare in a black neighborhood.
tinnerz58
That wasn't the guy that made the comment, and as I said to him, that's got nothing to do with driving ability!
Softcreamybeige
Over half of 65+ votes, compare that to the 18 to 29 which only about 19% votes..... and then you got political donations...
tinnerz58
For the last time that has NOTHING to do with driving ABILITY
Softcreamybeige
Dude. Politicians cater their opinions to their constituents..... when 65+ makes up the core of your support, you pass legislation for them
tinnerz58
So??? Literally nothing to do with what I said! Just because a law won't be passed doesn't change the point here
Chinwuba9
Amen to this. Ohio is awful

The drivers suck too

2/2 On multiple occasions, I have seen people driving with flat tires, on sparking rims. Once while texting with both hands. Madness.

lol I lived in Kettering a few years back and had to commute to Mason everyday, I-75 was the bane of my existence. God. Awful. Drivers.
IFoundOutICanChangeMyUsernameSoNowYoullNeverKnowWhoIWas
Living in Michigan. My new car has almost gotten completely fucked 3 times, all by old people who seem totally oblivious. I want this.
cheeseguy3412
remember my mom's name, keeps getting scammed by asses preying on old folks, etc. Doctor refuses to recommend his license be revoked 3/?

Also from michigan, can we get rid of no fault. Been hit twice while waiting at a red light and havent gotten my money back either time.

I just got hit by someone who ran a red last Saturday in GR. My car is fucked.

Let me guess. Grand Rapids. Driving is a nightmare in grand rapids

I just got hit by a driver running a red on College last Saturday :(

My grandfather desperately wants to drive. We desperately don't want him to. He shakes too much to hold a spoon (Parkinsons) 1/?
SpiritoftheSands
At least it's a problem that will disappear soon
FlyingButtPliers
My friend had an old man completely smash his rear end by driving into the back of his parked car. He was over 65 and lost his license.
dohcohv
I live in Nevada and drive a Miata. The number of people that try to merge into my lane is too dam high. Also people who don't use a signal
dohcohv
At a 4-way stop. I assume we are both going straight and then they try to turn in front of me, we both stop, then they turn their signal on
cheeseguy3412
He has fallen / broken things several times, can't walk on his own, can't see well enough to read his pill bottles massive fonts, cant 2/?
randomscrubtookmyname
For both of my grandmas we actually just took the right away ourselves. One understood why once we explained it, and the other was so 1/2
cheeseguy3412
Yeah, my mom drives him everywhere he needs to go, but he still wants to. He doesn't have the capacity for logically seeing why he shouldnt
randomscrubtookmyname
far gone from alzheimer's that it wasn't an option not to. Both had some family living with them so if they wanted to go we just drove them.
cheeseguy3412
due to fear of a lawsuit, license bureau won't revoke his license due to legalities. He'd crash before leaving the driveway. 4/4
AncientSeraph
Yeeey, sue culture!
DonnaNobleInTheLibrary
You guys need better public transport. And offer a one-year free ticket to every senior that returns his license.
gad885
Except those old people were the ones who created American car culture
Boongobbs
My grandpa is 93, has double vision, dementia, and a desperate need to drive. Doctor and DMV gave him his license. We had to sell his car
Boongobbs
2 We're lucky he didn't kill anybody
cheeseguy3412
Yeah, the car is his, and we don't have the legal right to sell it, unfortunately. He can't grant power of attorney due to him not 1/2
Boongobbs
Luckily my uncle had purchased my gramp's car, but still had a tough time convincing my uncle to take the keys
cheeseguy3412
being 'of sound mind' - so he continues to do what he wants. He cant make it TO the car though, its sad that this is a plus. 2/2
Fukyu2dei
Replace the key with another that won't actually start it... Or disable the vehicle so it can't start.....
cheeseguy3412
We have his keys, he just keeps thinking he lost them.
