There's been a few black cats, and other cats, around my apartment the last few years. All.of.them doing their damndest to make the Cat Distrubution System work on me. I just can't afford it though. Huge deposit required for pets, and an extra hundred or so a month on rent. But still, they try. Come home late at night, and boom, cat ambush, super affectionate, trying to follow me in, and I have to politely turn them away. Sucks, man.
Right decision. I don't have any pets anymore not only because of cost but neighborhood has changed: if I can't give them a good home ... well, then I would just feel very bad.
No it's not proof, but it absolutely looks like AI. Nonsense geometry on the hook hook in panel 1. Glowing arm, melting shoelaces, and weird composition in panel 4. If it doesn't look like AI to you then I'm happy you haven't seen as much AI slop.
Oh it is 100% AI slop; for all the reasons you mentioned, but it's also just the regular "generic AI slop style" and AI type lighting. Plus the cat face in the lower left panel. I don't know what that's about, but AI loves using that face for animals.
Plus, you can just do a reverse google search and find dozens of similar ones being spammed on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc that are even more obviously AI, like this one that even uses the same cat name/design
So, AI is really good at copying what exists. Which makes it hard to spot at a passing glance. And I have fallen victim to it too. In Firefox, right click the image and there is a "image search options >" with an X icon next to it. Do a basic search, Bing is actually good for this. With ZERO results the chances it is AI increases exponentially. Then, you learn to look for AI styling which is very prominent in every AI image unique to each program.
Look at the panel with the hand reaching down towards the cat and put yourself in an artist's mind. Why is the arm coming from that angle? Does it look natural? Why is the arm glowing? Why is the cat glowing? Why is the cat looking away from the person we are supposed to think it it's savior? Why that expression?
There is no single thing that points to it being AI at a glance, but it makes it more likely. Also all of the light in the comic is yellow, and that's ALSO a sign of AI.
The tell-tale light aura around characters is something that I hope takes them a long fucken time to find a fix for. That, or they could do something useful with their lives and rededicate their time to making that AI good at, idk, detecting cancers or figuring out solutions to congestion ('it just keeps spontaneously inventing trains every time!'). Or failing that, they could just stop. Like, entirely. Just, everything. Let the moss reclaim them.
Presumably the arm is of a second person? The aura is depicting happiness or "glow up" as they are rescued from the colourless and dull life. The last panel is the sun indicating how much brighter the cats life is now.
So, there is a second person, standing off to the side that isn't shown in any other way, and your evidence is how weird the arm looks? And that seems more likely to you than it just being ... wrong? Also, that whole "glowing" look is common to certain generative AI models.
ai has a distinct "style" that's easy to spot that no genuine artist would replicate, and the lack of any form of signature or watermark means the comic is either ai or blatantly stolen

the arm looks natural to me, it could be another person, the glow is because the cat is finally chosen. Cat is thus looking at the other person, in surprise. Like.... I genuinely don't see it.
Your explanation is that there is another person, off screen, who the artist just decided not to show in any way? And you think that that's ... how an artist would choose to do that?
I'll also point out, that yeah, sure, that sorta works for some of my questions, but ... again the sheer number of those problems mean that it's less likely to be decisions made by a human.
my experience is that a shelterworker will open the cage, and then you get to reach out to the animal. So that's why I do not see an issue with the comic at all. Because to me it makes sense.
Well it's in the classic AI slop style, and there's the cat face in the lower left panel (for some reason very common in AI animals) and the weird glowy light that AI frequently uses, etc.
Also if you just do a reverse image search you find various accounts spamming dozens of extremely similar comics that are even more obviously AI on various social media, including for example this one (taken from Instagram) that even uses the same name and design for the cat:
The biggest giveaway is the third panel. AI might mostly get the number of fingers right nowadays but compositional consistency is still something it struggles with. In the second panel, the cat is lying in the back of a back of a cage but in the third it's apparently in a big jail cell with multiple people?
That's perspective. The cat's in a typical animal cage in a shelter where groups of people pass by regularly. The camera, so to speak, is from the cat's POV.
the big red flag for me was the 3rd panel. the legs on the far right and left have the same stance. same heel/toe movement, same knee bend; only difference being one has khaki pants and one has blue. so either it's a recolored copy/paste, a recolored tracing, or AI generated. The lack of any kind of artist signature while also being perfectly cropped for a signature makes me lean to AI.
You do know that people regularly crop off signatures or artists credits right? There are literal comics of artists telling people to quit cropping off the signature.

I thought the same thing about torties, but apparently torties aren't commonly adopted either.

AI slop comics. I mean I like the story but I like it more if a real human drew it even if it's not as nice and shiny
EmporerDragon
In that case, I'd suggest checking out the manga "A Man & His Cat". It's about a widower adopting an adult cat and learning the joys of pets

Why the obsession with the name barnaby I wonder?

No idea, but when doing the reverse thing with this second one I found that it seems to be an AI edit of a different AI comic for whatever reason:

Ok, I meant third panel and fourth panel, respectively. I missed that the top of the comic was split into two panels.

So it shows the cat in the back corner rather the view from the facade. Your logic is flawed

Ok, I meant third panel and fourth panel, respectively. I missed that the top of the comic was split into two panels.

in a perfect no difference in anyway way, doubt. If they were capable of such steady line drawing they would sign their work.
