Quick background: this will be my 40-somethingth trip to Hong Kong and China. I've worked for American toy and gift companies for 15 years, and I have friends in both places (especially HK).

I've always known that the Chinese communist government is repressive, but this time it's really hitting home. Hong Kong is under threat of losing its right to THINK.

Heartbreaking.

And for all my compassion, here I am in a China Southern Airlines flight to Shanghai. I'll zip over to Hong Kong after that, and decide whether I'm going to hide away in a hotel room, or go out and witness history.

Ugh. Hmph. This should be an easier decision...

Most Viral edit: I'm here in China now, and can confirm: Imgur works in Shanghai! Good thing they stopped checking phones a couple weeks ago...

Please remember, it's the government that's the problem. Not really the people. Kinda like some other countries I know.

Love to you and yours. Call your mom and hug your kids!

It’s only a matter of time before my company sends me to China. I’m quite interested to know if they’re going to let me in or not.

It's too bad OP committed suicide after Chinese Customs/Border officers looked through the memes on their phone.

Be safe, but remember it for what it was.

Reminds me of Reno 911. Sees a 40 car pileup and speeds up to crash into it. How often can you say you were in a 40 car pileup?

You need to go see it, even if from a distance. Regret hurts. Just take care.

Hate for you to rot in Chinese prison, go on food tour or something safer please, raise your fist in protest from the safety of your hotel.

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

Do what you know is right.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Go out in the streets. Be safe. Record History. Let Hk know they are not alone. Come back and show us! #righthererightnow

The problem in China isn't their people, its their government. I like to think that mostly chinese people are good people.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Experience history. Make sure you tell the embassy you're there and how to contact you. Stay safe.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Stay in your hotel. I know it may sound interesting but China is looking for any excuse to attack the west and if you appear to be

6 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 3

Participating you could have some seriously bad things happen. Ik it seems like being a sell out but you as a western citizen would do

6 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 3

More good pressuring your government to step up than getting arrested in China.

6 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 3

No it shouldn't. It's a difficult decision, from a moral perspective, and that's not your fault.

6 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Don't worry, everyone's a sellout when the chips are down.

Moving to china for 6 months next february, I feel you.

Maybe hide.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You aren't a sellout because you're doing your job, regardless of what is going down there.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

you could use it as a chance to try and demonstrate values outside of what the Chinese government wants them to see

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Given that pretty much every company make their shit in China now, you aren't a sellout if your company sends you there.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Chinese consumers are not your enemy. Their government is. Unless they are buying your products you shouldn't feel guilty.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was there last year to provide training for veterinarians. Provide an opinion without being antagonistic. China hates appearing backward.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh. Hey. Fuck you.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 7

Don’t forget that Chinese jobs also benefit the Chinese people, who are the oppressed people we’re supposedly concerned about as well.

6 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 2

Nope all 1.7 billion people are Xi Jinping... Kidding... This whole thing is driving me crazy... If anything realistically came of what...

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

People think they are protesting against 1.7 billion people would go further into poverty (besides the 300,000,000 millionaires of course)

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Hate the government, but don't stop loving the people.
