I was a fairly sensitive kid and used to cry a lot, and was bullied heavily as a result. All the adults - my parents, the teachers - all of them in my life told me that I had to 'ignore them' and it'll stop.

It never did stop, but I started to learn to suppress my emotions to reduce the torment, but now no matter how sad or upset I feel, I can't cry. I can feel my eyes burning and the other 'about to cry' reflex, but the tears just won't come. I got accused of being cold by my family when I didn't cry when my grandfather died, and I just can't explain it, it's like the words to say it just die on my mouth and I freeze.

I want to cry, I want all these feelings to leave my chest, but something's stuck and it won't wedge it's way out.

Don't worry about it, people cope in different ways. I've lost family members, close ones, and haven't shed a tear

This is a form of crying on its own.

Dont push yourself, it will happen eventually, when you really dont expect it. That is my experience at least.

Same here. Some people are just different. Don't let anyone tell you how to grieve.

Sounds like you could benefit from seeing a therapist.

Sometimes you just... Don't. I couldn't cry either when this happened, still can't.

If you have an issue with being judged by your family, let them know it is not up to them how you express grief, and shaming you won't help.

I've had to deal with this myself, and still have issue expressing my sadness/grief, even when I want to.

tell your parents its their fault you didn't cry when your grandfather died since they told you to stop crying when you were being bullied

my parents never said that, though I had teachers tell me either to stop snitching or crying is a sign of weakness

They told him to ignore the bullies, not to stop crying. Did you not pay attention to what you were reading?

"Him" generic. I make no assumptions as to gender before being informed. They told her*
