Sparring is one hell of a workout. You can build some stamina outside the gym by added short sprints to long slow runs but, especially when you're first starting out, your heart rate and intensity will be much higher when sparring as you'll be nervous and tense. Learning how to alternate between tensing up during a strike and relaxing/recovering/breathing during a round takes practice. Stick with it. The payoff in both fitness and confidence is worth the effort.
I'm in my 60s. Working up to doing 20 rounds on the heavy bag for my next birthday. It takes time. Set an achievable goal and work toward it. You can do it!
I did boxing about a decade ago. Trained before trying to spar because it was not good to go in without learning how to hit and take a hit and how not to hurt yourself or the other person. Took me months before I even sparred for the first time. 30 second round felt like eternity. I got better but stopped cuz my trainer moved away and I didn't like anyone else
It can be a bit painful and awkward at first while you get used to the movements, rhythm etc but you'll soon be enjoying it! Oh and keep up the boxing too
@op don’t take this the wrong way, you didn’t feel like you were going to die because you went to a boxing gym. You felt like you were going to die because you’re out of shape. Keep working out, you’ll push the “I’m gonna die” feeling further and further away. I got a personal trainer a couple years ago and felt like I was going to die during our first session. By the next week, I was craving the workouts. Two quick months later, I was in the best shape of been in, in about 10 years. Then
I got to the point where I was kissed when I missed workouts because they made me feel so good, so happy, so focused, so free from anxiety. Four months in, girls were staring at me everywhere I went
Yeah this was my second session. I was wondering why I didn't feel like dying on our first session but i guess it was coz my trainer didnt want to push me yet. He sure tried this time though. And yeah im definitely out of shape but i really lack the motivation to do anything about it. I used to bike 90km every week but the big sad has really sunk its teeth into me since the pandemic.
The only way out of the big sad is doing things that you know are right but that you don’t want to do. Motivation isn’t free; you build it. Each time you go to the gym you’re adding some kindling, some tinder, a few logs to the fire of motivation. Eventually it burns intensely

Boxing is hard as hell. Punching a bag doesn’t sound like much but you get winded so damn fast

Take progress pics and videos and check back in a year by taking a new video and see how much your form and stamina has improved.
