How Does One Escape Bears (?)
TLDR: Can one run around a tree to escape bears?
So I have seen this image circulating the internet for awhile now, and it brought up an important question I have been wondering for quite some time. How does one escape bears?
I've always been curious if my theoretical solution to escaping a bear attack would work. Remember when you were a kid, and played tag in the park with other kids. And inevitably, either OP or someone else (usually the fat kid, who could also have been OP) was "it" and all the other kids would take cover behind a tree, hotdog stand, or even a (the) fat kid's mom. When the tagger tried tagging, all one needed to do was move so the tree (or fat kid's mom) remained between you and the person who was "It". Thus, you would both be running circles around the obstacle, the tagger usually changing directions trying to trick his target, but that just made things easier for the target. Eventually, the "it" loses, everyone cheers, and leaves him crestfallen and the obstacle depressed about her life choices...
Could this old childhood principle be applied to escaping bears? Yes, bears are fast, but momentum is a b**** for fat kids and fat bears. If you took an average size tree, and then just stood behind it, using it to move yourself out of the bear's charge, I am not convinced he could catch you.
Thoughts?
