It matters very little to me since I will always call this the Gulf of Mexico. Trump can label The Gulf of Mexico any way he likes, but it's The Gulf of Mexico.
As a US citizen - it's not our fucking gulf, and the US president is not the decider of names, he's just an idiot.
Deciding the local superpower should have dominion over seas nearby not within their territorial waters plays directly into China's "expand by stealing international waters" playbook.
When the bulk of the rest of the world with an emphasis on other regional powers decides to change it, maybe I'll listen.
They did. That's why U.S. Board on Geographic Names officially did it today. The president has this power, same way Obama changed the name of Mount McKinley to Denali. At least that made sense, but nonetheless the president has this power.
Unpopular opinion. I kind of get google's stance. It's not what I would do. Fuck Trump. But at least in the US Trump is president, and I am ordinarily against private companies fighting against the government.
For something like a name change (even a stupid one) It seems like they should follow government policy.
"I kind of get Google's stance" I'm Canadian and see it this way too. I don't need to see that asshole redraw the world because america the dumb doesn't have a spine.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the name change only applies to internal affairs (within internal documents). I'm not sure He has the power to do anything further than that.
Hmmm I wasn't sure if that meant i was right or wrong, so I looked at the executive order. And it reads to me that's all internal stuff, like internal documents and lingo speak within the government. (Or am I reading this wrong?)

Shits unbelievable. I'm not calling it that.

Unless the U.S. Board on Geographic Names went through proper procedure, this should not be changed.

Do they not put disputed/multiple names of other places in their maps?
sambaah05
They do

Well, who would have thought " Weird Barbie" already had the annexation of the Gulf on her World Map.

In short I blame Trump, not google for this one.

So this change by Google is a bit more "meaningful" than just "not wanting to fight the government"
