Obligatory final product first. (For the record, this was a gift for my little brother in-law)

Ahhhhh, yeeeeeeee boi! It is a real shield (my wife was not thrilled about this, something, something "he's gonna use it you know? Or something like that)

Even though I started with regular lumber, I hand planed to give it irregular edges for a hand cut vibe.

Doesn't mean I didn't use some modern tools to get it done though.

Roughed out the final shape. You might notice the boards don't line up, that's on purpose.

A little special effects magic. I wanted the shield to look like someone used a chisel or old school joiners axe. Compromised with a metal grinder. Gave the look I wanted.

Almost done with one side.

Metal banding to both give the edges more durability from swinging blows, and also to keep the shield from falling apart.

I did a negative template. This marked the areas I intended to leave.

Decided the outside needed some pizzaz. So I added a little freehand pattern to the outside.

Added the texture to the front.

Alright, I am not a Smith. I cheated. If anyone is wondering, that is hardware from a garage door kit. But it looks good so who cares.

A little text to add it all together before some slight staining and a little paint.
