My great-grandfather was a carpenter who taught my grandfather and my father. I wasn't really interested as a kid and now I'd love to learn but I'm in college so I learn over breaks.
We made around 12 sleds this Christmas for a few relatives at all different sizes. We were thinking we'd make a few more and try to sell them for fun in Middleburg near where we live. Im trying to guage interest and thought you guys would love these. The big ones can actually be used as sleds if you want but fair warning they're very slidey sleds - think Christmas Vacation sledding scene. The little ones look cool and can be ridden if you're ballsy enough.
My dad makes a sketch-up model first.
This one is made at two thirds size (banana for scale). It's about 24 inches.
The runners are made of a cool wood we found called Leopard wood and the slats and cross pieces are make of hickory. Sturdy as fuck. This is the one we're keeping.
The larger one is made of ash and is about 36in tip to tail.
My dad and I also made a ton of other furniture for the house like tables and benches and a closet/bench for our mudroom. I'm making a few Longboards with my grandfather, too.
Let me know if you think they're pretty cool or if you have any comments or questions or if you think they're fuckin stupid and you never want to see another hand made sled again. Have a great 2017!
tl;dr Christmas Vacation + wood.
Find me in one of the pics.
