Also teach them about guns. Ammo is not cheap either

I'm a lucky gal who works for a photography group!

Or teach them to love working out so they spend their money on gym memberships, healthy food, and supplements.

#1 is so true

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Or shoot in RAW with a quality sensor and you won't need filters (photographer here)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Fav and forget

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Instructions unclear... started dealing drugs to support photography addiction.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What kind of photographer are you? I don't see one single picture of Spider-man!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

UV is complete BS

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I thought I was done with buying camera stuff until the last event I shot when my Canon was knocked to the ground. Told it was unrepairable

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Daughter was getting difficult as only a 15 yr old can be. Gave her my Nikon (“Whatever, mom.”) & taught her abt f-stops & depth of field.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/2 Had very few problems after that. She built her own darkroom in the basement. She had control.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@ReasonableConservative Thank you for posting this.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We'll fix that in post...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

love this post

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

False my ex was a photographer and still wasted all our disposable income on drugs

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I like how people give others shit for putting a filter on their photos. I mean, of course I'm gonna make it look better, it's a photo?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I think that's more aimed at the crappy post process effects referred to by many as filters

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Anyone have advice for concert photography? I just got a 50mm f/1.8G Lens for my Nikon D5300 and playing with setting and it doesn't seem

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

like they're coming out very clear (I haven't had a concert to bring it to but just practicing in low light settings)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I spent 13k on lenses last year and zero on weed. Thinking about it just make me want to get high.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hey I'm just like you but in reverse.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The only filter I know how to use is Lens Cap.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

As far as protection goes, you're better off with a $5 lens hood than using extra glass that either ruins the shot or ruins your wallet.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've never had any issue with the protective filters and I usually buy the cheaper ones.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

, Shit, I'm glad I never went into Photography. Damn modest lenses can be $200 to $300, near $500.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You want the top notch lenses, better have a decent bank account.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Quick look on B&H and lenses for a Canon run from $125 to $26,000

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I always upvote photography stuff.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Me to my mortgage company: "you don't understand, it's a red ring lens, brand new, at half price!"

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I could have argued with them - until the point where they called a close-up lens a "filter". Simply nope.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 4

They aren't talking about an actual macro lens, they're talking about a macro filter that screws to your normal lens like any filter.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can get close up filters, i used to have one it just let you focus really close to a standard lens

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

yawn

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or then just don't put unnecessary glass in front of your camera -photogrpher

8 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 4

Filters are by no means always required but a really good UV filter makes a big difference for Summer holiday photos especially for rookies.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I suspect neccessary is subjective.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You should always at least have a protective filter on. Filters are cheap, lenses are not.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Agreed. Some of these are ridiculous and, or can be adjusted easily in post.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've had a bunch of lenses before hand and now I sold em all, just have the two primes a 21 and a 50 lol

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

hilarious.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Some of these are unnecessary. Some are very necessary, depending on the shot. Polariser, dark ND (i.e. 10 stop), ND Grad, even good UV.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

True

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I'd claim that protective filter is useful, too, since it reduces the risk of accidentally ruining your actual lenses.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Your $600 prime is not improved by that $10 filter. Only wear it if you can justify it's use.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a kid who has been taught photography, I now bug my parents for money for lenses. Just got my moms 130-300 f2.8!

8 years ago | Likes 78 Dislikes 0

Heavy, Try a 200mm 1.8

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

130-300 f2.8 - oh yeah that one.. I completely understand what you're all talking about and I am fitting in well: gotta love that f2.8

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Fixed aperture lenses are lovely I had a few Minolta and Sony ones that I sadly had to sell a number of years ago I miss them :( Enjoy yours

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wish i had someone even remotely close that had an incling of an interest in photography just so i wasnt alone in this marvelous world!gz!

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

...that sounds expensive as hell.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It is. Good lenses can cost a fortune, and this is most definitely where you get what you pay for.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Holy hell that sounds like an expensive lens, a wide tele zoom must cost thousands. My mom got me a pair of socks once

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is it the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8? Lucky bastard! Use it with care.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I was about to ask the same. Never heard of 130-300

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's something older then I remember. I love my 120-300mm, and will never give it up.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

full frame 50 prime and your first years (if not whole life) are covered..so a lot of room for drugs

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

85 prime for me

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Learned on a Canon 50 1.8; now regularly walk around with a Zeiss 50 1.4 and 35 1.8; it's wonderful to have to think and not just *zoom*!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have a few great Zeiss optics: 85 1.2, 28 2.0, 105 4.3, 1000 5.6 (Contrex mount :( ) Canon 70-200 2.8 II 200 1.8,

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Love my 50, it’s what I learned with and shot with up until now. I recently moved to a 24-70, so no drugs for a little bit ????

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I do wildlife, so 50 is rarely suitable for me.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

CROP CROP CROP!!! :P

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean that still only gets you to about 75mm equivalent. However, that is crop, not zoom. A 50 is a 50.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Consider this: 10MP camera

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

well damn...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

EOS 1D MarkIII ?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope, Nikon D60.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Every "filter" effect in this post is entirely done digitally in post processing.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 5

Monochrome + Colour Filters: I don't think you can achieve pictures as the Phase One does this way with it's ability to capture parts of IR

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Shooting in Raw allows a lot more wiggle room than one thinks

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Some yes but when you're a professional editing hundreds of photos, it's about saving time in post.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A polarising filter is the only one here that cannot be replicated in lightroom

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Well, the grads can also do stuff that can't be done in post, depending on your camera and how much the highlights are blown.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Bracketed exposure ftw.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

True, but you don't always have that luxury, depending on the scene.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ND filters can be useful in landscape photography as it said, as post-processing can't quite retrieve all that light data. Unless you HDR.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sorry, no. Can't capture the effect of a polarising filter, or a dark ND (i.e. 10 stop) with post, or at least not properly.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I'm talking about the images used in the posts. A nd filter can be mimicked by averaging multiple images.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Polarizing filter can be mimicked using local adjustment in Lightroom or local blending of a darker exposure of the same scene

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You said the filter effect, not specific to each photo, sorry if I took your comment at face value.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Plus using an ND grad to bring the highlights (or shadows) into the dynamic range of your camera.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can bypass a gradient filter using multiple images with different exposures and blend them in post processing.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That only works if A) the objects in the image aren't moving (even tree movement is a problem), and B) you are happy to lose raw editing 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

not if you use average pixel intensity for your stack of images. moving objects will be blurred out.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

after merging them; which I would generally still want to have through the whole process.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can I get one that doesn't leave circles on the photos?

8 years ago | Likes 639 Dislikes 5

You need to cut them out

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That would be a Reverse Circle Filter (RCF). Filters out circles.

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

This comment brings new meaning to the term "circlejerk"

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

The cirle is rem

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The circle is removed when you upgrade to the paid version

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No, Circles in photographs is the latest thing.

8 years ago | Likes 91 Dislikes 0

We are m8v7ng beyond triangles i see

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Popuralized on instagram!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, photos only come in circles

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

The lens is circular so obviously, the photo would be circular too.. Duh..

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

This is why all photos of the Earth appear round, when it's really flat.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I've got a growing passion for photography, two modified cars and a gaming rig. Wallet & pantry empty, please send help

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same as me.... I had more spare money when I was poor.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do you drive 2 cars at once like shoes or something? Sell one of them.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 7

That would mean choosing the daily or the race car, and driving around in a car on coilovers daily is never fun.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Photography, gaming, two cars and dreaming of a third, and a house.. It's a good thing I have a great canteen at work, so two meals daily ;)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Gaming PC, Classic Restoration, gun builds, tools for work, and magic the gathering keep my wallet thin.

Med school. What's money?

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Something you will have a lot of in a few years time

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

True but jesus if it doesn't suck ass right now.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That description fits me perfectly if you swap the gaming rig for watches.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sum of my life right here, except switch cars for roadbikes.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have kids that cost a shitload and they're not even an interest or hobby. Gaming rig is old, please send help.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Gaming rig, Downhill bikes, and the worst? Musician. Amps, guitars, drum kits, recording gear. I must hate money. Also send halp

8 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 0

I feel ya... 5 guitars, 7 trumpets, 3 computers, random music gear out the ass... and I cook for money ><

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

It's never ending with music gear, have to spend more on a bigger house just to keep it all in

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Holy shit 7 trumpets? I can see one or two Bb's, and a C, but 7 seems like a lot!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you add a piccolo trumpet then you've got 3 or 4..but yeah, 7...wow

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bb trumpet, student Bb trumpet, C trumpet, A/Bb piccolo, Bb cornet, Eb cornet, Bb p-trumpet

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2 basses, 1 guitar, gaming pc. I really need to get some decent amps for once & probably get some pedals... but first lets get my own place

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Been downsizing my amps as I tour anymore so can't justify two 4x12's I recommend the boss katana if you want a combo plus--

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's got loada boss pedals built into it which you can edit via USB and make your own pedal chain

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh cool, I just have a horrible bass amp. Had another amp when I was part of a group I volunteered for but had to give it back when I 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So that's like a Boss Katana 100 combo (~€300)?
