Let's try this again.

How it started.

1967 all original except for the paint.

How it ended.

Rear ended by an SUV while I was at a stoplight.

What I bought with half the insurance payout.

Sorry for the double dip but Imgur didn't include all the photos in my last post and so far will not allow me to edit or delete it.

Devastating. My wife's favorite car. Her first car was a bug in this color. She always wanted a Ghia.

Sorry for your loss. She was a beauty.

Heartbreaking. Glad you were able to buy a new car, though and didn't get completely screwed by insurance.

Bent frame maybe? Motor knocked loose?

All sorts of subtle body damage, and even though it was still drivable there was a misting of engine oil all over the back of the car that was rapidly building up over the month it took the insurance to settle. (engine is in the back for those who don't know)

It's a unibody, the whole car from bumper to bumper is a single piece of steel. Even though it doesn't look that bad, the impact twisted the whole car to the point that it would need the body removed to be straightened. Modern repair shops are not equipped for that and VW restoration shops are getting pretty rare in this part of the country. The only one close wouldn't even be able to look at it for an estimate for 6 months and most likely it would cost more than the value of the car in labor.

I'm sorry, my friend. My first car was a '73 Ghia and I loved driving it. That's heartbreaking

They are not unibody; they are body panels on a VW Bug chassis. You (well, ok, any decent VW Bug mechanic/shop) could have repaired it easily enough.

There are no body panels to bolt on and off, it's all cutting and welding in new sheet metal while it's on a custom jig to insure it's straight, Other than the doors, decklid, and hood it is all one piece. The body on mine was twisted to the point where the rear left was several inches lower and a few degrees counterclockwise than the rear right. There were splits in the seams where the body was originally welded into one piece, and it would not be easy to repair

Can you not dig your heels in with insurance? That's why I have it yknow. Cover my repairs, not zero out my loan.

It took about a month of fighting with them and getting my insurance company to intervene with the insurance company of the guy who hit me to finally get them to have a third party classic car appraiser determine the value based on current market prices and payout a fair price. There's no way to force an insurance company to pay more than the value of a car if injuries aren't a factor.
