DOGFORT NEEDS YOU -
- TO NOT BUY THIS DOG FOOD. EVER.
I started my dog on this food about a month ago because my financially cautious parents decided cheap dog food is good dog food. Since then he has been slowly developing rashes that are red, and cause bald spots. We didn't know what was causing it. I went online and did some research on the dog food he's eating. The customer reviews and complaints are utterly horrifying.
First things first: lemme visually horrify you
This piece of mold was found by a customer in one of the dog food bags. The next image is a very suspicious looking spot also found in one of Ol' Roy's bags of dog food. Source of the pictures: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/pets/ol_roy.html
There are a lot of other reviews out there about Ol Roy. A simple Google search will lead you to many unhappy dog owners who have lost their beloved pets within a week of switching them to Ol Roy.
Here's an analysis of the dog food:

If this doesn't make you unhappy, well, then, you are a very happy person.
Now the mental horrifying begins
Just looking at the ingredients on the dog food, the first couple are (and I am stealing this off of someone else's review) "Ground yellow corn, meat and bone meal, corn gluten meal, soybean meal, animal fat". The first and main ingredient in this kibble is corn, not meat, a product that can cause allergic reactions in dogs, which can result in a whole variety of symptoms, such as rashes, hair loss, diarrhea, vomiting, even leading to death. The next main ingredient is "meat and bone meal". The term mystery meat cannot even begin to describe what goes into the food. Rumors abound that they use euthanized animals as ingredients. The full, in depth review of the ingredients can be read here:

Where's the legal action?!?!?!
I have found one lawsuit against this brand of dog food, and it is accompanied with a heartbreaking account of a dog's last days.

No dog should ever have to suffer like that.
That being said, if I could afford a lawyer, I would sue the ever loving crap out of this company that dares to continue to produce such a product. Just because dogs don't have a say in their food doesn't mean they have to eat garbage.
My mother says he's not pretty. I think he's gawgeous.
This is my dog, and after reading all those reviews and user stories, I am so lucky he is still alive. I am switching him to a better dog food as soon as I can, but I don't know where I can dispose of this junk without harming other animals. So please, please, fellow imgurians, don't ever buy your dog or cat this brand of pet food, and make sure your friends and families don't either!
Thanks for reading! May your pets live long and stay strong!

Also, never use Hartz products on your pets. The fact that stuff is still legal to sell in stores is just mind boggling.

I believe this should go to the front page.

Any dog food with corn as the first ingredient is crap.

He's a handsome pup! Good luck with finding good cheap food... it isn't easy.
DreamBrother
I agree, but my parents dog ate Ol' Roy his entire life, and lived to be 18

Try Acania Grasslands, it's a gluten/corn free product based pretty much off Lamb, It's one of the best on the market, though its 80$ a bag.

damn... hoping the best for you, OP!

$10 for a 40lbs bag... It's like expecting McDonald's to be gourmet and healthy. Sorry OP, the saying you get what you pay for applies (1/2)

Try Purina ONE, it's in the mid range of pricing and the first two ingredients are "chicken, brewers rice" or "lamb, brewers rice" (2/2)

Oddly enough, one of my dogs is allergic to premium dog food, and can only eat Alpo without having issues. I TRIED to give him steak, he

wants McDonald's.
