I'm calling this "Laughing Triceratops." It was meant to be an abstract sculpture using found materials, but when the tree stump animorphs into a smiling dinosaur, just roll with it.
Smiling back at me, this sculpture brings me joy... More joy than a collection of scrap metal, sticks and rocks normally would.
It also moves, but not much because it is f-in heavy. I like the idea of it moving as birds land on it or the wind blows... But it'd take a cyclone and emu to really jar it.
The tree died of natural causes. It was a favorite, a peppermint gum tree, so I wanted to use the stump as a base for artwork. Initially, I was thinking of found-materials metal sculpture. Maybe welding something kinetic like a dancing figure.
This was a nice compromise... More abstract.
I had an old winch from an old truck laying around... Yeah, I bet you have 2 in your closet, too. Right?
And I felt guilty about scrapping it, so I made it the base for the sculpture. And it evolved from there.
I wanted to move everything into place with my excavator, but I couldn't get it into place without trashing the garden. So the whole build was by hand.
I have a bad back, and already had hernia surgery. This build nearly popped the hernia mesh... I am a dumb ass for risking it.
I did use the wheel barrel and straps where possible, but even getting that into place on this slope was a challenge.
The floating tree stump nearly fell on me a few times. It even ripped the toe of my boot open. Luckily, I was wearing steel caps.
It took me many hours to mount the base. I augered drilled out holes in the stump and pounded in the rebar. My arms were burning after that!
I then bent the rebar to fit into the winch base... Heavy steel base... A PITA to align. It took like 4 tries, and only went on after I widened the holes.
Over time, i expect the base to decay and the whole thing to collapse. But today, it is a smiling triceratops.
