When I hear someone using a tragedy as a soapbox

Tl;dr: overheard someone being tactless about the Humbolt Broncos tragedy.

My friends and I were talking about the Humbolt accident last night and how awful it was (if you haven't heard about it, as of now, 16 people have died as a result of an accident between a bus carrying a Junior Hockey Team and a Semi). We then got to talking about the support they got from hotels, airlines, and kickstarters. We're Canadian, so hockey is a HUGE part of our national identity and pride.

"But they don't NEED that money," was the comment someone gave.

They then went on to talk about how feeding the homeless cost less and that the people were well-off so they don't need the money or the free stuff.

Like, it's great to be so passionate about a cause, but time and place man. Maybe you're right; they don't need the money, but they sure as Hell don't need to go through this either. You also don't know what they're going to do with it and none of the family asked for it. You also don't know their situation, so don't be so judgemental in this situation.

You don't have to give them anything but empathy, and last I checked; that shit's free.

Credit for the cartoon goes to Bruce MacKinnon

The accident is tragic, the response is humbling. Helping others is a good thing to do regardless of their status.

As a Canadian, hearing or seeing someone say that 'hockey is a HUGE part of our national identity and pride' just makes me cringe. 1/2

I personally value our contributions to the sciences and the world stage a lot more than a bunch of kids smashing each other to pieces.

Could you explain the cartoon, please? I don't follow hockey.

It's about how all provinces are supporting Saskatchewan (one of our provinces) which is where Humboldt is.
