Johnston Island itself, 2 miles long and half a mile wide at the widest point

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnston_Atoll

Just looking to see if any of my fellow Imgurians would have been stationed at "The Rock" or at least know it existed.

I was stationed here in late 1999-2000 when the plant closed and tear down of the island began.

Might not be much to look at now, but, we had a blast living on this tiny scrap of coral in the middle of the Pacific. The main island in the reef is Johnston and the smaller outlying islands are mostly home to a ton of birds and nothing else. The main island itself was home to a number of fun activities for us
(all free of charge since the actual work was not something most people would prefer to be around)

You might not think this place was as wonderful as it truly was. Living there had it's down side (chemical weapons a couple hundred yards from your bed, and planes taking off and landing next to your barracks all day after working night shift) but, the government did take care of us. Among the amenities we had were a huge outdoor movie theater, a 9 hole golf course, softball field, and even an Olympic size swimming pool (salt water, but it was only for the people afraid of the sharks in the reef). We also had a full marina for kayaking, fishing, and even a SCUBA instructor with gear to dive the reef and play with the sharks.

If outside activities aren't your thing (and let's be honest, you're online after all) we had numerous make shift bars with what seemed like an endless supply of booze, a bowling alley, and even a computer lab for internet access (this was a converted bunker).

I will post more pictures if I get any interest here, I have some dive photos as well as some pictures of what live was like when life was there.

JACADS (Johnston Atoll Chemical Agent Disposal System)

This was the main plant most of the military and civilians on the island worked at. Guarding and destroying chemical/ biological weapons.

If any of you were stationed there throughout the years or had friends/ family that may have been please comment with any other pictures you may have laying around.
