For something that has an annual celebration, which fits neatly into the definition of what a festival can be, the distinction is pretty petty. It seems like they're trying to distinguish themselves from "music" festivals, and say they're more than that one event, but it just comes off as a self-serious bid for validation.

Yes and no. It started as an experiment in sustainable community living and experimental housing types and encouraging people to be their authentic selves. Its founders encouraged individual expression in all arts, most obviously seen monumental sculpture, plastic arts and entertainment art (fire artists, dramatists. Everyone is encouraged in spiritual expression. The Temple which is one of three infrastructures exemplifying this. Lazy, music festival types have limited knowledge of tihis.
