FantasticGibberish
Because most of us wished as a kid to be taller, or cooler, to have bigger dicks/boobs, not have a vestigal tail, better teeth growing up.
It's all insecurity. Sources just vary slightly. Mostly it's wanting to conform to 'normal'
When normal=white, there's a problem. Buck teeth and pimples are fundamentally different from skin color, dont pretend not to know that.
Agreed, it's a problem, but small minded to disregard/not understand all I said. Don't pretend not to know that is a petulant ad hominem.

But it also doesn’t have a lot of things (I would ascribe to a 1st world nation). But one thing it does have is the most insidious racism.
That I’ve ever experienced, with racism like America’s a lot of America’s amenities become moot for black folks. As they already are.
jerner15

Everybody that gets bullied or is the victim of racism regularly dreams of being someone else. Just to make the hate stop.
Think about media and movies. Think about the ratio of white to brown skin you saw. Think about the ratio in tons of classrooms. I always

I think almost all kids experience self loathing. It's part of growing up.

Yes. But when self loathing comes due to the color skin it is a problem.
And it doesn't have to apply to one skin color, as the comments have shown.

For me think it stem from TV shows mostly white kids being cool not much representation of black kids

there’s always a token minority popular kid in most shows. Maybe after the 2000’s though, but they are white washed in a way, very weird
Stoptheidiocy
As a POC I can tell you sadly it is.
CoarseAndSalty
What people scoff at representation in media, that's the toll of black kids not seeing other black kids in the world.
very complicated. but 1 of the reasons that in 1954 a small child looking at a dark skinned doll said it was bad.....
That court made the right decision. Which then took another 10 years to implement, if you consider it really implemented. I don't.
For me it came from the bullying and racism of kids and teachers. So I kept wishing I had light skin, blond hair, no accent, and money.
By the way I moved to USA as a political asylee at 11. So I have black hair, brown skin, an accent, and my family struggled to get by.
My sister and I were bullied at school by teachers and other kids.
elgringocontos
When culture tells you what you are is bad/wrong whether through discrimination or stereotypes you start to wish you weren't
imoutofnames
I'd say probably common for kids with low self esteem. you latch onto anything. I wished i wasn't white many times. Taller. Less ugly (1)
Hated my hair. Nose, eyes, voice. We don't (at least Americans) do much to help hurting kids. From racial discrimination to other (2)
Bullying. And it's sad.
dancingbarefootonlego
Bullying in general hurts all of us, unfortunately it’s perpetuated by ignorance which allows it all to continue

AnathemaNoreh
It has to do with low self-esteem and respect, according to the Clark study. The saddest part is the Clark study originally used the doll /
Test in the 1940s while segregation was at it's peak and was used to help the Brown case and desegregate schools, but even now over 80 years
Later you still get the same results. When asked which doll they want to play with, or which is the "nice" doll, most kids of colour still /
Pick the white doll over the black one. It's "better" and that's just heartbreaking
pleasewait
In a society where it's common for people with lighter skin tone to be the ones mostly represented in the media, it's hard to appreciate 1/?
Darker skin tone. Especially when there's bad representation of people in the media with your skin tone. You're also stuck with racism 2/?
And prejudice towards you that you're not even aware exists but doesn't feel right at a young age. Parents have to take the time to to 3/?
Remind their children to appreciate and love who they are, but parents are more worried about their children's survival. 4/4
I'm not black but I felt this way growing up and knowing I was gay. Can't count the nights I wished I wouldn't wake up or woke up smbdy else

It's funny. When I was a lid I wished I was black. Everyone in the 90s that was cool was black and all the kids in my school were black.

Same with being poor or a minority. It's easier to hate existence the more of those you stack on one another.

Some of it is just basic representation - Almost all depictions of "beauty" in media are white.
DartTarget13
Reason's why I am happy they have diverse disney leads these days.
Theyre also unrealistically starved rich people with 7 personal trainers. Being white doesnt make them realistic for white people either
amunday2013
Even the depictions of black women. have almost white skin. A lot of actresses and performers magically lighten as they become superstars
You also see this in China and India. Lighter skin color is preferred.
Yeah. Saw a docu that in multiple marriage areas, light skinned are typically first wives, darker are fourth. Last is basically slave.
Weird in the US. But in EU makes sense. Africa is all black or should be at least. And asian in asia. Right?
vezlys
Unfortunately, you'll notice even Africans and Asians trying to be more "white", bleaching skin, treating hair, eye surgery, etc.
In Asia it somewhat depends. Thailand for instance, they try to be whiter, but only because if they have whiter skin it means they have a 1/
Office job or a generally non labour related job. Which tends to mean they earn more money. So the whitening is more a socioeconomic/wealth
zhasylB
Yeah because there are no black people or asians in europe //s
True, but you wouldn't expect Japan to have tons of black people on their magazines, just like you wouldn't expect asians in an african one
CheapAss
Yes but it's a white country. Majority of the advertisement will have white people in it and representing their culture and race.
TakeMeToFrontPageAndBackFiveTimesADay
Far fewer than the US, see we slaved white people too and didn’t need to import slaves, we made them! We just hate the poor instead
TheDudeOrHisDudeness
The number is really small in some countries. Not every minority can get represented everywhere.

TheOriginalAmberRose
I think wishing you were someone or something different is pretty common. Don't beat yourself up over it.
B99Reactions
In a society that worships modifying yourself instead of being who you really are without changes, not surprising
PigsWeGetWhatPigsDeserve
The point: At sea level. You: At the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
SimplyViking
Yeah the cops will do it for you (I'm obviously joking, I feel for you @op. Don't let the world take you down)
Epinephilim
I dont think they're talking about hating themselves for that.
capricornstunner
Hey this is a deflection of a white person not seeing problems racism has had on BIPOC. Please read “White Fragility” thanks.
GrosseChung
Why doesn’t this have more downvotes? They’re wishing to be white, not to be someone they aspire to. It’s completely different.
FantasticGibberish
Because most of us wished as a kid to be taller, or cooler, to have bigger dicks/boobs, not have a vestigal tail, better teeth growing up.
FantasticGibberish
It's all insecurity. Sources just vary slightly. Mostly it's wanting to conform to 'normal'
Epinephilim
When normal=white, there's a problem. Buck teeth and pimples are fundamentally different from skin color, dont pretend not to know that.
FantasticGibberish
Agreed, it's a problem, but small minded to disregard/not understand all I said. Don't pretend not to know that is a petulant ad hominem.
mikeatike
There's a difference between wishing you are not who you are and wishing you were Wayne Gretzky.
AyDotHam
Not the same
jedwardhille101
We r talking about racism, not just insecurity
zebrakebebra
According to half the people in this thread, being psychologically impacted as a CHILD by a racist society is just 'low self esteem' lmaoooo
UKMonkey
Just remember - Trump got voted into power... and the people who voted are on here. Expect idiots.
WombatWithWholeWheatWish
Not sure why you are downvoted but the post was exactly about that.
ILiekToCookAndBake
I wished for a disease when I was young. I now have type 1 diabetes. Was a psychic? Was it dream? Who knows but that shit happened
Angmoh
I wished for the sweet release of non-existance. Sadly, nothing happend. Why do we must we suffer existance?
massaka123
As a kid I wished for being older. Now I am 47. Was I psychic? Was it a dream? Who knows but that shit happened

As a mexican kid, I wished I was american. Either color was ok.
Antumanke
You know you are American, right? Last time I checked, America was a continent...
Rhe0no
Being poor sucks too, I remember praying for a better life so many times.
BillHubbard
As a European, I have declined becoming American multiple times.
howcanmirrorsbereal
As a first generation Mexican-American I wished I was Spanish because I was ashamed of my culture and how dark my skin got in the summer.
sykoticflaw
And there are a whole lot of Americans now wishing they weren't American. Grass is always greener, I guess.
kelpo122
Another Mexican here, used to believe the US was awesome, until I learned enough English to read their own news sources without translating1
kelpo122
Then I realized that the US has a whole different can of problems I dislike a lot and would even grade worse than Mexican problems 2
kelpo122
I still want to get out from Mexico, just not to the US, from the pan to the fire and all that stuff.
Swishbug
This country would really fucking suck if it was just a bunch of white people. Thank you for being here. America will not be one color. ?
FlamingDeathGoat
As an American, come on over. Anyone willing to work, contribute, and respect each other is welcome here in my book.
approvalguy
I grew up and lived in Malaysia and Singapore. I wished I wasn’t white. I was caned for having brown hair accused of dyeing it. 1/2
approvalguy
To this day, I wish the worst for both countries.
PanicAtTheCostco
This is a great perspective to show people how being a non-white person isn’t the same for all ethnicities in America...
N0MamesGuey
Yep. Even if we’re born here it’s still assumed we’re foreigners.
spacecowboyein
When i was a teen I was embarrassed when my mom spoke our native language in public. Now I'm embarrassed that I ever felt that way.
Weareallprimates
Im so sorry. It's not fair.
ElbowDeep
As an American, I wish I was Canadian, eh?
nullbr
Are you sorry?
amoeba15
When Canada takes over the world, we'll all be sorry.
drchef1
Yes, sorry.

Living on the US side, with cousins and in-laws on the Mexico side... the level of envy and misplaced animosity is staggering.
WhatYearIsThis
As a latina, it was the same from me. I always dreamed of being blonde with green eyes and being born in the US.
talkingtothepast
As an American I wish I lived in Europe and could denounce my citizenship
digitalzombie90
This is a very under appreciated comment. Black people have it hard in US, there is no denying that. However if you take the rest —> 1/2

of the world in to account, all the poverty, war, death and torture, being black in America becomes a massive privilege. 2/2

esosa233
Idk what you’re on about. But I’m black, I’ve been black in a lot of places, America has a lot of things but it also doesn’t have (1/2)
esosa233
But it also doesn’t have a lot of things (I would ascribe to a 1st world nation). But one thing it does have is the most insidious racism.
esosa233
That I’ve ever experienced, with racism like America’s a lot of America’s amenities become moot for black folks. As they already are.
jerner15
Not saying you’re doing that, but lots of A holes use that logic to try and get black people to shut up and just accept our current systems
esosa233
Yeah idk what OP was trying to achieve, someone was just sharing their life experiences and they went off trying to gaslight them.
esosa233

As a Turkey born Kurd, I wished I wasn’t born. Listening to other people talk about how much they hate your kin without realising I was one.
AnatolianTiger
“Turkish”there are bad apples everywhere but i live in the eastern part of Turkey and most of people doesn’t care if you are Kurd or Turk
AnatolianTiger
You won’t see a segregation or discrimination like in the Usa over here. It’s not the same thing.
AnatolianTiger
We don’t like pkk(terrorist organization according to the Usa too) because it wants to grab a piece of land of Turkey.Dont mix up two of em
IDontWannaBeACowboy
Gonna show my ignorance here, is that common? And why? I know the discrimination is crushing but I didn't know kids thought this way
uhushuhu
There is a gif about Black Kids choosing White dolls because the Black doll is ugly etc... Heartbreaking
MacAwesome
Everybody that gets bullied or is the victim of racism regularly dreams of being someone else. Just to make the hate stop.
PanicAtTheCostco
Think about media and movies. Think about the ratio of white to brown skin you saw. Think about the ratio in tons of classrooms. I always
PanicAtTheCostco
noticed the pretty white girls I was a different color from. Knew it made me different. Didn’t care if other people cared. Wanted to fit in.
AnAccountToPostThis
I think every kid does it at some point. Maybe its their teeth, their hair, their skin, their eyes. We all didnt like something about us
Whackamoley
I think almost all kids experience self loathing. It's part of growing up.
thespiritofadventure
Yes. But when self loathing comes due to the color skin it is a problem.
Whackamoley
And it doesn't have to apply to one skin color, as the comments have shown.
ssj4mathgenius
I could see this. I'm gay but I remember as a kid in high school I wished I was straight so I would be "normal"
SlappedStupid
Fuck normal so much though. Seriously. I hope you don't feel that way any more.
JimPlaysGames
When racism is so prevalent and entrenched that it seems more feasible to change your skin than change people's minds.
Huskyboiler
I wanted to be "normal" and fit in wherever I went.
aninvisiblemaniac
I'm gay and I've definitely wished I was straight. Grass is always greener sort of thing in my experience. Just wanted a "simpler" life
TautyetMalleable
I've wished you were gayer.
aninvisiblemaniac
many have

wishing you were different for any reason is common in children. wishing for different weight, hair, nose, freckles, tan, boobs etc
FormalWareBytes
https://youtu.be/nbkObXxSUus please watch. The hearbreaking part is how true this is so many decades later :(
CarlottaVonSprockett
I wished I was a boy because I thought they had life easier. It’s common to wish things were better for yourself.
rigs1983
I was 14, my mom was in the bank and bought chicken for me to eat while she did stuff. Sat down on the curb and waited.
rigs1983
She had to explain to the staff that I was her kid and they didn't need to call the police
Autumngirl09
For me anyways it was because I was around white more. And they made it a point to mention I was different. As a teen that really gets to u.
nagesagi
Well, when you know people will dislike or hate you for a thing, then you start to wish you didn't have that thing. Could be color, rich /1
nagesagi
poor, smart, dumb, certain cloth, the list goes on and on.

Asian here. Wanted to be white as a kid or at least have "white" features. Being the only non-white in your class is rough.
CandidGamera
Children are more perceptive than most adults think - they just can't fully articulate or understand what they're experiencing. And it's ->
CandidGamera
<- not hard to pick up something's wrong when you can't draw yourself and your family with the crayon labelled "skin color"
kgbishop
For me think it stem from TV shows mostly white kids being cool not much representation of black kids
PrincessWasabi
there’s always a token minority popular kid in most shows. Maybe after the 2000’s though, but they are white washed in a way, very weird
Stoptheidiocy
As a POC I can tell you sadly it is.
CoarseAndSalty
What people scoff at representation in media, that's the toll of black kids not seeing other black kids in the world.
Weareallprimates
very complicated. but 1 of the reasons that in 1954 a small child looking at a dark skinned doll said it was bad.....
Weareallprimates
That court made the right decision. Which then took another 10 years to implement, if you consider it really implemented. I don't.
thespiritofadventure
For me it came from the bullying and racism of kids and teachers. So I kept wishing I had light skin, blond hair, no accent, and money.
thespiritofadventure
By the way I moved to USA as a political asylee at 11. So I have black hair, brown skin, an accent, and my family struggled to get by.
thespiritofadventure
My sister and I were bullied at school by teachers and other kids.
elgringocontos
When culture tells you what you are is bad/wrong whether through discrimination or stereotypes you start to wish you weren't
imoutofnames
I'd say probably common for kids with low self esteem. you latch onto anything. I wished i wasn't white many times. Taller. Less ugly (1)
imoutofnames
Hated my hair. Nose, eyes, voice. We don't (at least Americans) do much to help hurting kids. From racial discrimination to other (2)
imoutofnames
Bullying. And it's sad.
dancingbarefootonlego
Bullying in general hurts all of us, unfortunately it’s perpetuated by ignorance which allows it all to continue
melmboundanddown
I wished I was taller and played ball. I really wanted for a rabbit in a hat for some reason too.
lostlittletimeonthis
So most media is white centric, as a white person you don't even notice until you see the importance black actors had in blk ppls lives

It's similar to kids who grew up poor wishing they weren't poor...except much worse because there is absolutely nothing to be done about 1/

skin color. It's similar but so much worse. 2/2
AnathemaNoreh
It has to do with low self-esteem and respect, according to the Clark study. The saddest part is the Clark study originally used the doll /
AnathemaNoreh
Test in the 1940s while segregation was at it's peak and was used to help the Brown case and desegregate schools, but even now over 80 years
AnathemaNoreh
Later you still get the same results. When asked which doll they want to play with, or which is the "nice" doll, most kids of colour still /
AnathemaNoreh
Pick the white doll over the black one. It's "better" and that's just heartbreaking
pleasewait
In a society where it's common for people with lighter skin tone to be the ones mostly represented in the media, it's hard to appreciate 1/?
pleasewait
Darker skin tone. Especially when there's bad representation of people in the media with your skin tone. You're also stuck with racism 2/?
pleasewait
And prejudice towards you that you're not even aware exists but doesn't feel right at a young age. Parents have to take the time to to 3/?
pleasewait
Remind their children to appreciate and love who they are, but parents are more worried about their children's survival. 4/4
elgringocontos
I'm not black but I felt this way growing up and knowing I was gay. Can't count the nights I wished I wouldn't wake up or woke up smbdy else
LIJdeJapon
It's funny. When I was a lid I wished I was black. Everyone in the 90s that was cool was black and all the kids in my school were black.
graehall
I feel that. I was raised fundamentalist and realising I was queer made me loathe myself. I didn't want it to be true. Sucked.
kmikl
I'm sorry you went through that.
zebrakebebra
Being black AND gay is fun. Gay people are no less racist than the gen pop. Black people are no less homophobic. Soo....
elgringocontos
Trust me, I know. The gay community is very bad with discrimination. Not only black but feminine gays etc.
thematman
Masc 4 masc. No asians, just a preference. :(
sgtpugsley
Well, at least you both have masks
capnsebastian
It's complicated topic. Self-loathing is common amongst people who experience disadvantages growing up. Racism creates disadvantages...
CmfMttnPpl
I grew up being a poor as dirt white kid.. i hated myself for being to poor to dress or act like the other kids
capnsebastian
Same with being poor or a minority. It's easier to hate existence the more of those you stack on one another.
ISnoggedMadamedePompadour
Being poor resonated hard for me. I didn't want other kids to know, and we went to a nice school. But they all knew cuz of a racist fat kid.
ISnoggedMadamedePompadour
He hated on me for wearing the same 3 outfits thought the year. Always made fun of my family. I got him back though. Last day of freshman
ISnoggedMadamedePompadour
Year he made a comment about my mom smelling bad because we couldn't afford running well water. I walked over and grabbed him by the
capnsebastian
Especially if you experience it since youre being a kid. Depression sets in early.
capnsebastian
It's all part of the reason the system needs to change. No once deserves that kind of experience.
dudeyeadudeuhwhateverdudebro
Magical word called repression.. its not pretty.
schtomp
Some of it is just basic representation - Almost all depictions of "beauty" in media are white.
DartTarget13
Reason's why I am happy they have diverse disney leads these days.
AnAccountToPostThis
Theyre also unrealistically starved rich people with 7 personal trainers. Being white doesnt make them realistic for white people either
amunday2013
Even the depictions of black women. have almost white skin. A lot of actresses and performers magically lighten as they become superstars
elgringocontos
You also see this in China and India. Lighter skin color is preferred.
amunday2013
Yeah. Saw a docu that in multiple marriage areas, light skinned are typically first wives, darker are fourth. Last is basically slave.
Angmoh
Weird in the US. But in EU makes sense. Africa is all black or should be at least. And asian in asia. Right?
vezlys
Unfortunately, you'll notice even Africans and Asians trying to be more "white", bleaching skin, treating hair, eye surgery, etc.
Angmoh
In Asia it somewhat depends. Thailand for instance, they try to be whiter, but only because if they have whiter skin it means they have a 1/
Angmoh
Office job or a generally non labour related job. Which tends to mean they earn more money. So the whitening is more a socioeconomic/wealth
zhasylB
Yeah because there are no black people or asians in europe //s
Angmoh
True, but you wouldn't expect Japan to have tons of black people on their magazines, just like you wouldn't expect asians in an african one
CheapAss
Yes but it's a white country. Majority of the advertisement will have white people in it and representing their culture and race.
TakeMeToFrontPageAndBackFiveTimesADay
Far fewer than the US, see we slaved white people too and didn’t need to import slaves, we made them! We just hate the poor instead
TheDudeOrHisDudeness
The number is really small in some countries. Not every minority can get represented everywhere.
amundost
There are countries where there are almost no black people. Old soviet nations have a very white demographic
amundost
The UK, France, Belgium etc have more black people
zhasylB
Old soviet nations have a lot of asians though. Source: me an Asian from an old soviet asian country
5tonaLisa
There is that same problem in South Africa. Huge white population that make the locals feel like black is wrong and the tip of it is their's
Angmoh
SA, is a whoole other ballgame. Apartheid and years of oppression have done a number on the collective culture
Angmoh
Which sucks balls. Not advocating for Apartheid. Have to make that clear.
