Because you have to grant that they're not asking everyone to prove their legal status, only certain people. What criteria are they using to determine who to question/detain? Because, last time I checked, nobody is walking around with a glowing neon sign that says "citizen" or "non-citizen".

I don't think any of us are safe. They're already talking about declaring the DNC to be a terrorist organization, so sooner or later they'll come for the liberals. So, I carry a Passport card and I am lily white... I do not expect ICE to give a shit if they are intent on detaining me (my guess is they would just throw it away and say it never existed... hell, family bringing birth certificates to court hasn't gotten someone released from ICE detention).

I am an EU citizen, and a permanent resident of the US. I'm of Tatar descent, which means that I tan terribly dark, up to the point of failing the brown bag test, but out of the sun become white enough (for now)
For the last year, I have been wearing tropical wear, and wide brimmed hats in addition to sunscreen. I carry my green card, as well as a copy of my passport. I agonize over whether I should carry the actual passport... but I am afraid that it will get "lost" if I am picked up.
