He said he'd be back

He said he'd be back. It was a long time ago now, 10 colds ago. He was my best friend and I was his, we went everywhere together. Until that day. We were playing and he fell from the fence, I watched it. It didn't seem so bad but I guess it was. Nobody came to help and I couldn't reach him. He put me here to keep me safe. Now, I wish he didn't. I keep looking and hoping he'll come around the corner. I'll keep waiting. That's what friends are for.

When they took him away, they were crying. He looked at me and gave a thumbs up. He said he'd be back. The time doesn't bother me much. The cold hurts for a long time but the sun still can warm. The tree keeps me from falling, so I'm safe. I wish he was in a tree and stayed off the fence. I'll wait. It isn't the same without him. He always said I was his patient friend, so, I'll wait. I see his family a lot but they never notice me. One day.
