Some Awesome and Recentish Hand-drawn Animation

Jul 16, 2015 2:24 AM

@Gr00ver mentioned in the comments for this gif ( http://imgur.com/gallery/F3544hH ) that he had forgotten how great hand-drawn animation can look, and that he missed it. Though in many ways considered a dying art, great traditional animation is still being made! I wanted to bring a few of the recent gems that I know of to the attention of those out there that might care!

I thought the best way to make the case for the animation in each of my examples was to just show it to you, but keep in mind, these gifs can't really do the intricate nature of these works justice.

Adam and Dog (2013)

With every frame drawn and water colored by hand, Minkyu Lee's short film Adam and Dog is a gorgeous showcase of the craft. The short follows the first dog in the Garden of Eden as he searches for a best friend. It's only 15 minutes long and the whole thing, in HD, is available on YouTube! And no, trust me, you do not have to be Christian to love and be moved by this piece. Total atheist here and I cried a little the first time. And the garden and all the creatures within it are just wonderfully animated. It's beautiful, you'll laugh, you'll cry... trust me, this is good stuff here.

NSFW Warning: Though nothing is graphic or drawn in detail, Adam and Eve are both naked for most of the short.

The Secret of Kells (2009)

The Secret of Kells came out in 2009, so maybe you have heard of it. Whether you have or have not, if you love traditional animation it is a must see! The movie tells the story of Brendan, a young Irish boy who defies his uncle in order to help Brother Aiden complete the most amazing illuminated manuscript of all time. Along the way he and Aiden's cat Pangur Ban befriend a forest spirit and must face the forces of evil. Slow-paced and stunningly animated, Tomm Moore is almost like an Irish answer to Miyazaki. I absolutely love this movie!

The best part, you can stream The Secret of Kells on Netflix! Do it now!

Song of the Sea (2014)

Song of the Sea is the second film by Tomm Moore and crew and it was only just released so you will likely either need to pirate it or purchase a physical copy if you want to see it. Like The Secret of Kells before it, it takes place in Ireland. The story revolves around a young boy named Ben, who discovers that his mute younger sister is actually a selkie - a girl who can transform into a seal from Irish mythology - and together they must find her voice in order to save her, and all faerie creatures, from the spell of the Owl Witch.

As much as I adored The Secret of Kells, I think I love this new title even more. If you live in Portland, Maine and want to see it, I will seriously walk over with it on a thumb drive so we can watch it together. I want to share it that much. The whole thing is magical and makes you feel like a little kid filled with wonder all over again. It's so fucking good, you guys.

Well sadly, that's all I know. I would love to make a part 2 if anyone brings some really great work to my attention. Viva la animation!

creativity

Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea are beautiful. The creators wanted to be pretty much "the irish studio ghibili" they pretty much are.

You are very welcome. Doing some reading about the animator, he does character design for Disney and did the end credit sequence of Tangled.
