You need a permit to hunt and the dates varies depending if it's rifle, bow, etc. So my guess is that he didn't have a permit for hunting at all. When agents got there, he was starting to gut the elk and left without taking anything. So he basically killed an elk and left it to rot. Agents saved what they could according to the article I've read. So if he gets caught, weapon gun, truck gone and if they search his house, his freezer might be a goner too.

As for the dangers of poaching aside from the waste: Hunting is used to control animal populations and the permits issued (which are inexpensive and easy to get) are used to control population levels. Sometimes permit/license issuing is changed or restricted based on needs. Too many poachers or people hunting the wrong animals can quickly spiral into a population crisis that fucks EVERYTHING up in the area. A (food) chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

In most of the world, poachers are generally doing it because they're facing crushing poverty and the solution is probably to elleviate the economic circumstances.

There was a case of people poaching in Wisconsin recently where they were doing it for fun, and killed a LOT of deer, and were horrible to those poor deer. It's a horrible case, and wtf is wrong with people.

Granted - I'm not so familiar with poaching in the USA. In the UK Animal hunting is almost always a bloodsport which needs to die.
If he *does* happen to be from poverty, then I sympathise. We need to do more to make poaching unnecessary, globally.
