Secretary Kristi Noem's plan to use border funds for an almost $300 million luxury jet fleet has "horrified" top Trump officials, Axios has learned.
Until last year, DHS owned zero luxury jets. Soon it could have three.
The acquisition comes as the Trump administration is under fire for a historic government shutdown and is aggressively seeking funds to fuel its mass deportation "Operation Aurora."
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is redirecting roughly $290 million originally earmarked for "border security and enforcement operations", which includes deportation flights, to purchase and outfitting three Gulfstream G700 jets.
The G700 is one of the world's most expensive and luxurious private aircraft, featuring up to five living areas and a master suite with a bed and shower.
The move has created a rift within the West Wing. While Noem argues the jets are necessary for "secure, long-range command and control," some of President Trump’s closest advisors are "livid," a source familiar with the matter told Axios.
"We are fighting for every penny to get the deportation planes in the air, and she’s buying flying penthouses for herself," said one senior administration official. "It’s a massive optics failure during a shutdown."
Last October, Noem drew fire from House Democrats for using $172 million in taxpayer money to purchase the first two Gulfstream jets while the government was shuttered.
Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), the top Democrat on the Homeland Security Committee, called the move "blatantly immoral" at the time.
This latest $120 million addition for a third jet and custom "communications upgrades" brings the total fleet cost to nearly $300 million.
In a statement to Axios, a DHS spokesperson defended the purchase, saying the Secretary requires "state-of-the-art, secure communications that only these platforms can provide" to manage national security crises while in transit.
The spokesperson added that the older Coast Guard aircraft currently in use are "at the end of their service life" and "unsafe for long-haul international missions."
House Appropriators are expected to grill Noem on the purchase during upcoming budget hearings. Critics say the move contradicts the administration’s "efficiency" mantra led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy’s DOGE.

And I suppose she and her buddies will use these jets for "official bidness" like the Olympics.
medici
Needs a separate jet for her elaborate cosplay.
derekjohn
Well if just one of those jets was used to deport Noem and a few of her friends it would be money well spent.

She's just jealous of Kash's and wants one of her own.

I love this. I hope she blows the whole ICE budget on jets and cocaine.

"horrified top trump officials"
Top trump officials are jealous her luxury jets are bigger and are horrified they have to wait until next year to get theirs
chatawillybilly
Trump/Musk established DOGE to cut wasteful gov't spending. Oh no there is no waste, private jets are necessary for our national security says puppy killer.

I don't really understand the need for a luxury jet in the first place, but I don't think I'll ever understand why one person needs a whole damn fleet of luxury jets.
flounder35
I encourage her to do more of this. In fact every Homeland personel should have their own private jet.
WoTLert
Nah, if you put them all in one jet's it's a lot easier to - ... uhm ... I'm on a watchlist, aren't I?
popeyeNL
Why would you need to fly "international missions " for immigration enforcement ?
Mack1986
DHS in theory could be a good thing: if it was a single office. A bunch of lawyers. And. Handful of analysts from the DoJ DoD and State. The only goal is to ensure IF we have intelligence of another 9/11 its legally distributed to the right people. Fire everyone. Take that money and spend it on our infrastructure. Undue what doge did

South Dakota is one of the most corrupt states. She is just doing it on a level people are starting to notice.

To be fair, wouldn't want to commit atrocities and fly without a bar. If I had to be this horrible, I'd like a drink during my commute too.
Antininny
This shit is 100% pathological. Don't assume her atrocities put a psychological strain on her in any way. More likely they do the opposite. She is a monster.
ElusiveThing
Of course a different situation, but the German soldiers were often reported to drink outrageously to cope with that they did. But the leadership seemed to have even fewer qualms about it.
Can't say I've witnessed any regrets from these folks. The lack of very basic empathy is just stunning and ghastly.

Nobody is twisting her arm.
ElusiveThing
Yeah. I try to be careful with my wording. English as a third language and don't want to make big assumptions. But we are at a point where euphemisms just don't work.
Randomice
And a security blanket for each plane.
ZaphodBbx
Just today I heard [NPR] that it wasn't a blanket she'd left, but something of a personal, and likely embarrassing, nature.

Paid for with tax dollars
fillerbunny9
That’d be an improvement in my book. I’d prefer my tax dollars be spent on weapons of ass destruction than weapons of mass destruction

Yes, it's a government-owned dildo, but she believes it's hers.
