No, it really didn't. The combat had zero nuance to it whatsoever beyond "use basic attacks" because spell damage is so limited unless you have an endgame monster that had all the skulls to learn Big Bang/Hellblast and even then they were outclassed by QuadHits, or even just a basic attack command.
The iterative breeding system was the mechanic that made that game compelling, but it's excruciating to properly raise endgame monsters even with an emulator with speedup.
I had to call the Nintendo Powerline a couple of times. I remember for TMNT crossing the roof section cause I didn't have a manual. Also Star Tropics there is a section the manual had some numbers in it and I rented the game so it didn't have a manual.
We never had Nintendo Power and if we called those hotlines we'd be skinned alive and screaming. But me, all my friends, and sometimes even our parents would pass controllers around playing games like that, all trying to figure out the tricks and hidden locations and sharing what we know so we can get a little further every time
God, I remember spending hours just sitting on the couch in someone's basement as we took turns passing the controller around. Meaning one person would play Mario for an hour. Then when my turn came I'd be dead within 30 seconds and then wait a few hours till it got to my turn again. I think it took me 6 months to make it world 1-3 :-)

before every combat you get an ad

Got this free from a Nintendo Power promo. Took me two hours to get out of this fucking room because I refused to read the instruction manual.

It's dangerous to go alone. Fortunately the "basic sword" is on sale today only for $3.99.

This was the first NES game I bought with my own money. I hate what you've done to my boy.

I still say Dragon Warrior Monsters had more fun monster gameplay/mechanics than Pokemon. DWM2 was especially awesome. Holy crap they ruled.

LOL Dragon "Warrior" (Quest). My favorite NES game.
Havacado
For NES it was RC Pro-Am and Excite Bike. Act Raiser for Super NES was my earliest super favorite though

Mine was DW4. I played the hell out of that. I played the hell out of this one too, but 4 was my favorite

DQ3 got me through middle school

My kids still don't believe me that you had to be in the same room with your friends to play multiplayer games.

My nephews and nieces do, but because I get them playing the classics and writing "book reports" on them for $10 a pop.

Couch co-op PvE is best co-op.
