They became "legitimate" when they were granted by the Supreme Court. Congress could, in theory, outlaw them or we could amend the constitution to remove any ambiguity, but none of that is going to happen. The law stands: the president of the US has absolute immunity and can execute anyone on earth at will without the slightest fear of any legal jeopardy.

When a sitting president issues a day one executive order that directly contradicts the U.S. Constitution, it kind of does become a matter of, disobey the fucker because he's obviously got no allegiance to said document, despite his oath to the contrary. That document has the last word unless and until a majority of Congress agrees to amend it. The POTUS has zero authority to do so.
