Neskowin Ghost Forest

OC: Ghost Forest, Neskowin Oregon

These are the +/- 2,000 year old stumps of Sitka spruce trees. It's estimated that they originally stood 45+ meters tall before they were submerged in the Pacific after the Cascadia fault reshaped the coastline.

Several hundred stumps were (re)discovered when a storm in the 1990s again reshaped the coast, this time exposing the trees' skeletal remains.

The saltwater killed the trees gradually and over the centuries became a home for barnacles, mussels, and assorted other tidal critters.

The rings are still clearly visible...

... but only if your visit coincides with low tide.

Want to visit? It's called Neskowin Beach State Park, just off the Pacific Coast Highway.

Be a good & thoughtful human.

You got a relatively clear day! FYI- That small river you have to cross is cold as fuck and knee deep in the winter.

I lucked out with an hour of sun back in May before a storm came in that night, but my first visit in Feb was plenty chilly. Worth it though
