There actually used to be a river that ran along the path of the pyramids called Ahramat (Likely ancient Nile) that dried up from natural river shifting. So the river was basically right there where they were building these things thousands of years ago. The Great Sphinx is so old that the pyramids are closer to use than the pyramids are to the Sphinx. So they had lots of time to figure out how to move large stones.
