Made a new leather auger bit case

May 1, 2018 1:09 AM

Last weekend I re-roofed my grandmother's house, and as I was packing up my tools I saw a raggedy old sack with a bit sticking out of the end. They were my grandfather's old auger bits (he died 21 years ago) and my grandmother gave them to me.

Forgot to take a picture of the rusty bits, dropped them immediately into vinegar, but they were pretty bad from years of neglect. This is the old case. It smelled terrible.

I buy leather scraps in bulk, because I like the weird stuff I get sometimes, but I decided to go with a pretty standard tan and black.

Saddle stitched the outside edge first.

Totally noob here. I've sewed very rarely, and hand stitching this was a pain.

This took what felt like forever.

Pockets for the first few are done, along with the protecting flap.

Back side.

All pockets and flap done. Folded for fit.

Flipping it over to make sure it'll still roll up right with bits in it.

Finished sewing on the back feat. my toes. All in sewing all of this by hand took however long American Gangster plus For a Few Dollars More is.

Added the little belt piece on the left and put the bits in

The belt loop I used.

Rolled up.

And rolled up done!

And a final pic of the bits cleaned up, if you guys didn't know what auger bits are. This was one of the first times I've really gotten into leather working, and I'm happy with the result. Still a novice though so send tips if you got em!

I love the original box mine came in but I might make one of these for easier transport! +1

There’s nothing worse than a raggedy sack.
