quick history, this post showed up about an hour ago

http://imgur.com/gallery/QPOMQ i figured what the hell, even if it has a buck then it was a fun way to kill a few hours.

lightbulb

there were 1000 possible passwords, but he said one of them was the correct one. easiest thing would be to use a custom dictonary with a brute force cracker and i'd be done in no-time right?

yeah.. not so much

before i even started there were so many wrong attempts that a captcha was required with each login attempt. fireforce wasn't built to handle captchas, so i was SOL. I resorted to randomly picking out, cutting a password and trying it.

holy sweet jesus

I was talking to my stepson while i was trying passwords, then suddenly i look back at imgur and HOLY SHIT I'M in. I then pasted the password again into a text editor so i wouldn't use it: iamthebenefactor popped up as soon as i pasted. that sneaky bastard...

so natrually i was like this

and this

this was the hidden image, pulled from the benefactors account. i assumed that "you know the password" meant it was the same password i used for the imgur account. smooth sailing from here!

outlook

i get to the outlook signin page and the password isn't working. i start flipping out. i realize i had to copy thebenefactors name at one point, so that wasn't the real password. i went back to my notepad and prayed a ctrl-z would work: and it did. the actual password?

TlDrNfap3d

yeah, thats "too long, didn't read and fapped"

in the email! it looks like someone tried to reset the password via email. i get in, download the rar file. its password protected, which means tit. it was probably just there in case someone got to the email without the first password.

a gif file? alright, lets extract it and open it up...

SON OF A BITCH! oh well. fucking op got my heart racing today, so i have that going for me, which is nice.

I would check each frame of that .gif. Put it under all kinds of filters for another clue.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I think TlDrNfap3d means too long didn't read and fapped in 3d.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That was well planned

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The only thing that made this better was that this album was 11 images, so I had to wait for the final gif to load.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

thanks. that was intentional :D

So he was more like the Jigsaw apprentices which make their games unwinnable.

CONSPIRACY THEORY: OP is "The Benefactor" but got annoyed when no one tried to solve his clever troll, so he just posted it like this.

11 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

I was in usersub when it got posted. Thought it was too much work to begin with, and was thankfully enlightened just now that I was right

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

OP gets another email from the benefactor

11 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

I read through the comments to see if anyone else had the same thought, bravo my friend!

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I actually ctrl+f searched to see if anyone else had mentioned this. +1

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

940000 bytes Exactly? What an odd file size. You might want to take a closer look at that gif.

11 years ago | Likes 94 Dislikes 0

Exactly my thinking, especially with the filename "final test"

11 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

Steganography perhaps? Something hidden in one of the stills from the gif?

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

There's a reason .gifs take so long to load. No-one ever optimizes them.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The compression ratio is terrible in that screenshot.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

(((940,000/939)/(2014/264))+14+2-9-2) = 2.6287878787878787878787878787879, nearest whole number is 3, Half life 3 confirmed.

You sir deserve a cookie

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

This is correct. It's all just adobe XMP information.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The examples I found of this gif are 939,958 bytes. Somewhere along the line, this one got 42 bytes larger. Could be nothing, but...

11 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Try a diff.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I took the same sample I guess you found. They both have the same creation day, but start having very small differences. Looking into it :)

I've logged into the account. It's shit.

11 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 0

virtual private networking wouldn't do what you want

11 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 1

Eh, you shoulda kept the account going and kept doing these things. Maybe now that you had publicity for it you could make them more complex

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

he wasn't the actual guy. once my post got popular several people logged into his accounts since i didn't change the passwords

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

At least it wasn't dickbutt.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Probably just an attempt from OP to discourage other players while OP still inputs passwords

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

11 years ago | Likes 227 Dislikes 0

i like you

11 years ago | Likes 150 Dislikes 0

think about it this way: it could've been my bitcoin wallet which has a whopping 0.017 cents in it. (yes, less than one cent)

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

thats actually what i figured when he touted an "undisclosed amount"

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Actually that's slightly less than two cents according to my verizon currency calculator

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(i honestly can't tell, are you making fun of verizon, or did you not get what I said? not $0.017, but $0.00017)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Rendal Munroe did a little feature on it, but it might have been a bit too obscure a refeence.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i had never seen that, and that's why I didn't get the joke. thanks for clearing that up

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"easiest thing would be to use a custom dictionary with a brute force cracker" Sure, I do this every day.(????)

11 years ago | Likes 1340 Dislikes 8

Lots of people do it, hence captchas. Now only people who are smart can do it.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I brute force into at least 5 female cracks a day.

11 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

some days even twice.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You should, it's a fun skill to have, if not actually very practical.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

how would one go about learning this skill?

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Same way you learn anything really, Google a lot, find steps online, watch a couple videos, practice a lot. That last one is the kicker.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tis how the fappening happened.

11 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 5

Really? I had assumed they found a more useful exploit in the "Find my Phone" service?

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There is no more useful exploit than trying out the top 1000 passwords. Use a pass-phrase, people. And not "correct horse battery staple".

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Sorry, but there is no way the leaks were the result of a brute force password attack alone. If so, they would have been leaked years ago.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Brute forcing with a custom dictionary is just making your own list by which a program will roll through and try to log in with each combo.

11 years ago | Likes 168 Dislikes 0

how would one go about doing this?

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

ahh thanks, so it´s useless to have a complicated password because you run this thing and that´s it?

11 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 2

If your password is on that SHORT list. Most sites allow about 70 diff. chars. which means over 100 billion possible pws with only 6 chars.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It depends. Using actual words is weak, using just numbers is weak, using L337sp34k is weak. Most sites/programs lock out users after many

11 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

2)failed attempts. Brute forcing doesn't always take a long time, good software will make it take a long time though. Longer passwords,

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

3)even weak ones, take longer just due to length. http://xkcd.com/936/

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

No.. completely wrong. Complex passwords are much more difficult to crack.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not at all. Normal brute forcing goes through literally every possible combination. Unless you have good information, it takes lots of time.

11 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Yeah, but Google Ultron can crack any password less than 10 characters in a matter of minutes.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you use specials characters like $, & and @ etc and more than 8 chars then it's almost impossible to crack with BF.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This thing is slow, slower if the target password is longer.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Essentially, unless you have a list of potential passwords, which is highly unlikely, brute forcing could take years.

11 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 2

I'd estimate (not sure if the data is available anywhere) that 95+% of account passwords are stolen from attacks on the database, rather

11 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

than attacks on individual accounts, and of course it doesn't matter how complex your password is if they can see it

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

No, a complicated password PREVENTS this from working. Longer passwords prevent bruteforce, complex passwords prevent dictionary attacks.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh wow, found this going through my history and didn't realize I already replied to this comment. XD

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is always the case. What matters is your password length, not the complexity. If they run a program, this program will

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

include all symbols. Having a longer password just means it will take longer to crack. There was a cartoony post about this somewhere..

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

http://xkcd.com/936/

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, complete opposite. This thing is the whole reason you need a complicated password. "abc123" would take seconds to crack. (cont...)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

While "$Willy%58Nematodes$" would be virtually impossible to dictionary attack, and to bruteforce would literally take billions of years.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Except now since you've said it it's on every dictionary out there :P
