I know, I hate political posts too, but this is actually important. At least there's a news headline that isn't clickbait, for once.
"Theresa May is planning to introduce huge regulations on the way the internet works, allowing the government to decide what is said online.
Particular focus has been drawn to the end of the manifesto, which makes clear that the Tories want to introduce huge changes to the way the internet works.
"Some people say that it is not for government to regulate when it comes to technology and the internet," it states. "We disagree.""
...
"The plans will allow Britain to become "the global leader in the regulation of the use of personal data and the internet", the manifesto claims.
It comes just soon after the Investigatory Powers Act came into law. That legislation allowed the government to force internet companies to keep records on their customers' browsing histories, as well as giving ministers the power to break apps like WhatsApp so that messages can be read."
...
"The government now appears to be launching a similarly radical change in the way that social networks and internet companies work. While much of the internet is currently controlled by private businesses like Google and Facebook, Theresa May intends to allow government to decide what is and isn't published, the manifesto suggests.
The new rules would include laws that make it harder than ever to access pornographic and other websites. The government will be able to place restrictions on seeing adult content and any exceptions would have to be justified to ministers, the manifesto suggests.
The manifesto even suggests that the government might stop search engines like Google from directing people to pornographic websites. "We will put a responsibility on industry not to direct users – even unintentionally – to hate speech, pornography, or other sources of harm," the Conservatives write."

Yes, most of you here won't care or won't be able to help, but if you're a British imgurian reading this, then please don't let ThatcherBot 2.1 win. The Tories want to own and control every part of your life they can. If you value your internet as it is, please do not vote Tory in the election next month.
If you have a Tory MP, write to or call them, and tell them you will not be voting for them because of this manifesto. That you value a free and independent internet where people can speak their minds. That the cost of personal freedom is too high for the vague goal of "leaving terrorists no place to hide".
If you do not have a Tory MP, then write to or call your local Tory candidate and tell them the same.
Tell others about this. Tell them to do the same. Make this plan as politically toxic for the Tories as possible.
tl;dr: Tories want to control and censor internet. Muh porn. Don't vote Tory next month.
EDIT: I was informed by @JohnSmithterms that there are only two days left to register to vote for this election. You're required by law to register, regardless, but you should really exercise that right once you've acquired it.
Get your register on: https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

Government is pushing ppl to use proxies and darknet. Old ppl dictating future of things they have no idea about.
TheFastpaws
That is some serious bullshit. It seems like the UK and the USA are out to screw up the Internet for everyone these days at this moment.
Ivain
Wow. At least the US is TRYING to hide what they're doing. Meanwhile, the UK: "Hold my beer, Daddy'll show you how censorship is done"
Churlish1
Gov't is frightened by the use of the internet. People just might rise up when they know the truth. Control the masses through propaganda.
CrissCross35
The next step would be to have microphones in your home controlling what you can and can't say...Just like in North Korea.
CMDRAescwulf
your phone and TV already has the potential for that.
FuzzyX
Smart TVs already do that should you add some NSA style monitoring.

If it is anything like the US, saying terrorism will get a significant portion of the population to be okay with it. Porn though...

I swear, sometimes the British society sees '1984' as an instruction manual instead of a cautionary tale...
wyt3fr0g
This is very important. The conservative party are in the lead in the polls. We all need to vote to stop them.
RedMedal001
Uuh, very facist of her
ElPoloDiablo
The Tories got a massive case of shit to the brain when UKIP got so much support, so they decided the best thing to do is be more Fascist.

How long do you think we have until they rename themselves Norsefire?

BazzyMuffin
I like porn, which is why I am voting in this election.
TheBritfag
Please don't be a dumb cunt and actually look at what every party has to offer. So many cocks are voting a specific party because of 1 thing
BazzyMuffin
I've pursued, and have yet to make a decision. The comment was primarily for a joke.
TheBritfag
I get it mate, but so many first time voters are being daft and voting for one party because of one thing they like about what they said.
HitlersArtCritic
This goes for all elections. Republicans like guns, but like passing policies that fuck over everyone.
TrexBoner
Correct me if I'm wrong but the "both parties are the same" lie seems to be worldwide. With conservatives acting like actual super villains.
Selerox
Sadly, neither party if remotely the same. But they're just shit, just in wildly different ways.
miatagangordie
This is how revolutions are born
HitlersArtCritic
IIRC their "stab proof vests" aren't actually that good, and the guy posted a video proving it was labled a terrorist and stuff via medias.

UK people are too apathetic for it, and most would support these restrictions.

Anyone But Conservatives/UKIP, not really a fan of labour but they are getting my vote because fuck tory cunts.

"Fuck Tory cunts" is as good a reason as any to not vote for them.

Turnout for 18-24 age group in 2015? 43%. In 2010? 44%. If you don't get out and vote you can expect more of this nonsense. Vote, please.
ComicallyLongUsername
Over two million people have registered to vote since this election was called, around a hundred thousand a day :D
Vazaha
As a corollary to the above, turnout in the EU Referendum for this age group, arguably those that would be most affected by the outcome? 36%

Fine, I'll just go create my own internet ... with blackjack and hookers.

In fact, forget the internet.

Just blackjack and hookers it is.

I don't watch porn, but I'd never take it away from people! What makes them think that taking away other people's liberties is okay?!
leodavinci1
Because the only way to have an orderly society is to have a controlled society.
ellert0
Well, either controlled (North Korea, Saudi Arabia, China) or educated (most stable 1st world countries)
Idsertian
The same logic that made them censor even more porn a year or two ago.

"Spam" is such a strong word, but if you've got info to add, go for it.

All they need is a foreign VPN to get around restrictions à la China. I imagine many UK citizens already use a VPN to frequent torrent sites

LoopStricken
Oh no no no, we won't have nannies anymore; the NHS will be reduced to ashes.
amglasgow
It's not a nanny state if they're not trying to protect you from yourself.
javjav
Isn't the ban on pornography basically that?
amglasgow
I guess that's the rationale for it, but everyone knows it's about punishing those dirty whores.
javjav
That's also a nanny situation tho.
bennysouthst4
We've got 3 choices - the evil party, the nonsense party, and the "they still exist?" party.
Dravit
It's a choice between Labour and Tory. And whilst I'm no Tory-lover, just look at the fucking state of Labour. They're a disaster.
KingORedLions
Labour's manifesto was surprisingly reasonable (very Nordic) - I would suggest people read it.
Dravit
I can undermine the Labour manifesto in five words. "Where's the money coming from?" They're about £50bn out on the numbers...
KingORedLions
The manifesto is fully costed, you can see exactly where the money is coming from.
Dravit
Labour have a tenuous grasp of economics at best... To be frank it's like choosing between ebola and AIDS.
Dravit
They want to take us back to the 1970s. Abbott can't count and Raynor has no idea what 'education system' even means. Corbyn's a muppet.
acrobatman
do you happen to own a right wing tabloid by any chance?
Dravit
Nope, equally I think May putting fox-hunting back on the table is abhorrent the Tory plans for internet regulation can suck my dick.
KingORedLions
Now you're literally just quoting the Daily Mail.
highpieinthesky
It's all the students who believe Corbyn will solve all of our problems that gets me. Lesser of two evils but by no means the solution.
TheBelleOfTheBrawl
Okay so how ignorant of me is it to think that if all this happens, we'll find a way to make a new unregulated Internet again? Serious Q.
JohnSmithterms
The only way I would imagine this being possible is for a network of people to own open wifi hardware. But it could be insanely slow and 1/?
JohnSmithterms
and limited to the content published on the network. It would be exactly like going back in time to 1991.
Idsertian
The first thing any government will do is pass a law making it illegal to make an unregulated net. That's assuming it isn't far too 1/2
Idsertian
technical to access it in the first place. 2/2
kiwiflavored
If all this happens, people will simply pay 10 bucks a month for a VPN, just like Chinese people are currently doing to use the entire www
InternationalPhoneticAlphabet
thing is, seemingly every gov (or at least every country's rightwingers) want to do this - the more hop on the censorship-train, the >
InternationalPhoneticAlphabet
> harder 'just using a VPN' will become. yeah, you might still be able to get one, but for publishers, it will be harder.
kiwiflavored
You mean governments will try to block VPN access? Good luck with that. China has tried just that and VPN providers have quickly found...
kiwiflavored
ways to avoid detection. Don't get me wrong, I'm not arguing that government censorship is no big deal & we shouldn't be up in arms about...
InternationalPhoneticAlphabet
no, but if you have to go through all these hoops, it will be very discouraging for publishers - especially if they want to make money.
dissapointinglysmallwhale
Pisses me off that I'm just a month too young to vote in this election.
Idsertian
Shit man, that's gotta suck. :/
spookytwigg
That sucks. There's nothing worse than caring but being able to do nothing about it.
JohnSmithterms
If just 1/3 of the under 25's who have never voted, did vote this time for Labour we would win easy. 3 days left to register.
JohnSmithterms
Encourage your friends to vote.
TheBritfag
Fuck labour. They'll be the downfall of this country if they're voted. Cobryn is insane.
JohnSmithterms
Could you provide a reason other than your personal opinion. Give me some data.
TheBritfag
The fact that the madman Cobryn wants to neuter the country by removing our nuclear deterrent and reducing our armed forces?
JohnSmithterms
Trident is not a big conern to me either. Its only 5 billion out of 600 billion of tax revenue each year. I want labour to tax Google !
JohnSmithterms
He wants to but labour policy is to keep it. So it will stay. I don't think trident is usefull as long as we have allies with similar tech.
TheRealHS
Reading the pledges you get the impression that they don't understand how the internet works and this will fall flat on it's arse.
ICanChangeMyUsernameWheneverIWantButIDontBecauseIAmGodDamnLazy
Here's a small extract from their manifesto:
williamvanauger
They don't. I would bet good money that most Mps couldn't use the internet without help.
williamvanauger
That is tory and labor before someone moans.
Sumpte
1) They don't. A few years back, they decided they wanted to 'ban all Encryption', until it was explained to them internet banking wouldn't
Treblaine
It's just so asinine, it's like saying "we want to lead the world in safes by mandating every safe have a catflap installed"
Sumpte
2) work. So instead they want to make every service provider (banks, Facebook, etc.) to create a back-door for security services, not
Sumpte
3) that those back-doors can also be used by hackers. They do not have a fucking clue, they're just clinging onto their authoritarian roots.
Idsertian
They already implemented a "you must tell your ISP you want to see porn" program. Plus they semi-successfully blocked TPB.
NanoPi
AU ISPs blocked TPB by DNS and IP. alternative DNS works and Cloudflare gave them a new IP. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
FuzzyX
I just have a life-time VPN subscription to kiss all censorship goodbye.
TheRealHS
And neither of those things really work.
Idsertian
I can't speak to the porn thing. All I know is that you have to specify whether or not you want to see it when the guy installs your net.1/2
Idsertian
As for TPB, no, it really doesn't. 2/2
ArtOzz
Torrent websites. They are a study in why this will not work. Shut 1 down and it just reforms a while later. They block anything and people
ArtOzz
will invent a work around a few minutes after its implemented if not sooner. The government is outnumbered 100 to 1 in that respect.
Idsertian
The internet is not a net. It's a living organism. It treats censorship as damage and routes around the blockage. Same way a body does.
NotTheSharpestSpoonInTheDrawer
We used to say this about The Great Firewall of China too, and it was true for a long time. But now they've got near absolute control. /1

Wait until their voter base dies off. Shouldn't take long.
DickDastardly404
The issue is that there is a lot of people who vote for the Tories because they believe they stand for the good old days. They have a 1/2
DickDastardly404
monopoly on rose tinted glasses. They run on misplaced nostalgia. In reality, more than any other party, the Tories ARE from the old 1.5/2
DickDastardly404
days, a lot of their members, especially the cabinet etc are from money. Their parents are business men and politicians, and they were1.75/2
DickDastardly404
raised to think they deserved what they had, and never questioned what they were going to be. They are career politicians, and they 1.875/2

spookytwigg

IrishCyko
I agree. The younger generation is going to suffer if the Tories win. She's like the female Trump.

Republicans are pro-business right-wingers. Tories are anti-business right-wingers. Unless you think that ISPs gain from total govt control.

It doesn't help that so many old people read Tory Propaganda every day. Oh, wait, it's called 'The Daily Mail', apparently.

If I had read "Republicans" in the first comment, this statement would still 100% pertain to America.
PriestOfLordVote
No it wouldn't. Republicans would deregulate the industry so your ISP can ban you from looking up other ISPs. Corporate tyranny.
PriestOfLordVote
But these guys are fucking over the companies as well as the users - that's just plain "nanny-state" govt tyranny.
spookytwigg
Shits pretty fucky in both areas.
williamvanauger
because they are a group of people that are totally detached from lifes actual problems.
Znayx
What are Tories? I've seen that in many places, mostly at least loosely related to politics. In newspapers and online.
LoopStricken
Conservatives. Right-wing. Old rich fuckers who give zero shits about the poor and the ill.
Znayx
Ah. Living in Canada I assumed it name "Someone who lives in Toronto". It really does sound like that...
rayeofsunshine
We have three main parties in UK. Conservatives = Tories, Labour and the LibDems. None of them are good choices right now
Znayx
I see. I've heard it in Canada too. I guess it must be a comparison of political leaning.
ComicallyLongUsername
>Implying Lib Dems are a real party these days
vizz11
The biggest problem is though if we vote labour we will have to pay for the changes for years to come on top of that brexiters bill (1/?)
vizz11
If we vote for lib Dems they will revert the entire brexiters process and ruin any chance of Britain getting a good deal from brexit (2/?)
vizz11
if we vote ukip we will also get a bad deal from brexit because the EU doesn't really like that party and as you've said the Tories (3/?)
vizz11
Aren't much better we haven't got a great choice in the elections and if we don't vote one of these choices will get in so (4/5)

The question is which is best for us outside of the EU (5/5)
