With all the talk of the dangers facing Net Neutrality in America, please don't forget that the internet is also under threat in the UK.

I know, I hate political posts too, but this is actually important. At least there's a news headline that isn't clickbait, for once.

"Theresa May is planning to introduce huge regulations on the way the internet works, allowing the government to decide what is said online.

Particular focus has been drawn to the end of the manifesto, which makes clear that the Tories want to introduce huge changes to the way the internet works.

"Some people say that it is not for government to regulate when it comes to technology and the internet," it states. "We disagree.""

...
"The plans will allow Britain to become "the global leader in the regulation of the use of personal data and the internet", the manifesto claims.

It comes just soon after the Investigatory Powers Act came into law. That legislation allowed the government to force internet companies to keep records on their customers' browsing histories, as well as giving ministers the power to break apps like WhatsApp so that messages can be read."

...

"The government now appears to be launching a similarly radical change in the way that social networks and internet companies work. While much of the internet is currently controlled by private businesses like Google and Facebook, Theresa May intends to allow government to decide what is and isn't published, the manifesto suggests.

The new rules would include laws that make it harder than ever to access pornographic and other websites. The government will be able to place restrictions on seeing adult content and any exceptions would have to be justified to ministers, the manifesto suggests.

The manifesto even suggests that the government might stop search engines like Google from directing people to pornographic websites. "We will put a responsibility on industry not to direct users – even unintentionally – to hate speech, pornography, or other sources of harm," the Conservatives write."

Yes, most of you here won't care or won't be able to help, but if you're a British imgurian reading this, then please don't let ThatcherBot 2.1 win. The Tories want to own and control every part of your life they can. If you value your internet as it is, please do not vote Tory in the election next month.

If you have a Tory MP, write to or call them, and tell them you will not be voting for them because of this manifesto. That you value a free and independent internet where people can speak their minds. That the cost of personal freedom is too high for the vague goal of "leaving terrorists no place to hide".

If you do not have a Tory MP, then write to or call your local Tory candidate and tell them the same.

Tell others about this. Tell them to do the same. Make this plan as politically toxic for the Tories as possible.

tl;dr: Tories want to control and censor internet. Muh porn. Don't vote Tory next month.

EDIT: I was informed by @JohnSmithterms that there are only two days left to register to vote for this election. You're required by law to register, regardless, but you should really exercise that right once you've acquired it.

That is some serious bullshit. It seems like the UK and the USA are out to screw up the Internet for everyone these days at this moment.

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Wow. At least the US is TRYING to hide what they're doing. Meanwhile, the UK: "Hold my beer, Daddy'll show you how censorship is done"

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Gov't is frightened by the use of the internet. People just might rise up when they know the truth. Control the masses through propaganda.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The next step would be to have microphones in your home controlling what you can and can't say...Just like in North Korea.

8 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

your phone and TV already has the potential for that.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Smart TVs already do that should you add some NSA style monitoring.

If it is anything like the US, saying terrorism will get a significant portion of the population to be okay with it. Porn though...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I swear, sometimes the British society sees '1984' as an instruction manual instead of a cautionary tale...

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This is very important. The conservative party are in the lead in the polls. We all need to vote to stop them.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 2

Uuh, very facist of her

The Tories got a massive case of shit to the brain when UKIP got so much support, so they decided the best thing to do is be more Fascist.

Please don't be a dumb cunt and actually look at what every party has to offer. So many cocks are voting a specific party because of 1 thing

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I've pursued, and have yet to make a decision. The comment was primarily for a joke.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I get it mate, but so many first time voters are being daft and voting for one party because of one thing they like about what they said.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This goes for all elections. Republicans like guns, but like passing policies that fuck over everyone.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Correct me if I'm wrong but the "both parties are the same" lie seems to be worldwide. With conservatives acting like actual super villains.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Sadly, neither party if remotely the same. But they're just shit, just in wildly different ways.

Over two million people have registered to vote since this election was called, around a hundred thousand a day :D

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a corollary to the above, turnout in the EU Referendum for this age group, arguably those that would be most affected by the outcome? 36%

Because the only way to have an orderly society is to have a controlled society.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Well, either controlled (North Korea, Saudi Arabia, China) or educated (most stable 1st world countries)

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

It's not a nanny state if they're not trying to protect you from yourself.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Isn't the ban on pornography basically that?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I guess that's the rationale for it, but everyone knows it's about punishing those dirty whores.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's also a nanny situation tho.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We've got 3 choices - the evil party, the nonsense party, and the "they still exist?" party.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It's a choice between Labour and Tory. And whilst I'm no Tory-lover, just look at the fucking state of Labour. They're a disaster.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Labour's manifesto was surprisingly reasonable (very Nordic) - I would suggest people read it.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I can undermine the Labour manifesto in five words. "Where's the money coming from?" They're about £50bn out on the numbers...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The manifesto is fully costed, you can see exactly where the money is coming from.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Labour have a tenuous grasp of economics at best... To be frank it's like choosing between ebola and AIDS.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They want to take us back to the 1970s. Abbott can't count and Raynor has no idea what 'education system' even means. Corbyn's a muppet.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

do you happen to own a right wing tabloid by any chance?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope, equally I think May putting fox-hunting back on the table is abhorrent the Tory plans for internet regulation can suck my dick.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Now you're literally just quoting the Daily Mail.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's all the students who believe Corbyn will solve all of our problems that gets me. Lesser of two evils but by no means the solution.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Okay so how ignorant of me is it to think that if all this happens, we'll find a way to make a new unregulated Internet again? Serious Q.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

The only way I would imagine this being possible is for a network of people to own open wifi hardware. But it could be insanely slow and 1/?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

and limited to the content published on the network. It would be exactly like going back in time to 1991.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The first thing any government will do is pass a law making it illegal to make an unregulated net. That's assuming it isn't far too 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

technical to access it in the first place. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If all this happens, people will simply pay 10 bucks a month for a VPN, just like Chinese people are currently doing to use the entire www

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

thing is, seemingly every gov (or at least every country's rightwingers) want to do this - the more hop on the censorship-train, the >

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

> harder 'just using a VPN' will become. yeah, you might still be able to get one, but for publishers, it will be harder.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You mean governments will try to block VPN access? Good luck with that. China has tried just that and VPN providers have quickly found...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

ways to avoid detection. Don't get me wrong, I'm not arguing that government censorship is no big deal & we shouldn't be up in arms about...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

no, but if you have to go through all these hoops, it will be very discouraging for publishers - especially if they want to make money.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pisses me off that I'm just a month too young to vote in this election.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Shit man, that's gotta suck. :/

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That sucks. There's nothing worse than caring but being able to do nothing about it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Could you provide a reason other than your personal opinion. Give me some data.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The fact that the madman Cobryn wants to neuter the country by removing our nuclear deterrent and reducing our armed forces?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Trident is not a big conern to me either. Its only 5 billion out of 600 billion of tax revenue each year. I want labour to tax Google !

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

He wants to but labour policy is to keep it. So it will stay. I don't think trident is usefull as long as we have allies with similar tech.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Reading the pledges you get the impression that they don't understand how the internet works and this will fall flat on it's arse.

8 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 1

Here's a small extract from their manifesto:

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They don't. I would bet good money that most Mps couldn't use the internet without help.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That is tory and labor before someone moans.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1) They don't. A few years back, they decided they wanted to 'ban all Encryption', until it was explained to them internet banking wouldn't

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

It's just so asinine, it's like saying "we want to lead the world in safes by mandating every safe have a catflap installed"

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2) work. So instead they want to make every service provider (banks, Facebook, etc.) to create a back-door for security services, not

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

3) that those back-doors can also be used by hackers. They do not have a fucking clue, they're just clinging onto their authoritarian roots.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They already implemented a "you must tell your ISP you want to see porn" program. Plus they semi-successfully blocked TPB.

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

AU ISPs blocked TPB by DNS and IP. alternative DNS works and Cloudflare gave them a new IP. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just have a life-time VPN subscription to kiss all censorship goodbye.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And neither of those things really work.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I can't speak to the porn thing. All I know is that you have to specify whether or not you want to see it when the guy installs your net.1/2

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

As for TPB, no, it really doesn't. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Torrent websites. They are a study in why this will not work. Shut 1 down and it just reforms a while later. They block anything and people

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

will invent a work around a few minutes after its implemented if not sooner. The government is outnumbered 100 to 1 in that respect.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

The internet is not a net. It's a living organism. It treats censorship as damage and routes around the blockage. Same way a body does.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

We used to say this about The Great Firewall of China too, and it was true for a long time. But now they've got near absolute control. /1

The issue is that there is a lot of people who vote for the Tories because they believe they stand for the good old days. They have a 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The biggest problem is though if we vote labour we will have to pay for the changes for years to come on top of that brexiters bill (1/?)

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

If we vote for lib Dems they will revert the entire brexiters process and ruin any chance of Britain getting a good deal from brexit (2/?)

I believe they're trying to scrap the free school meals for younger children, which for some could be the only hot meal they get...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tried to subvert it by saying they'll give them breakfast aka slices of toast or something. :L

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Geez, even the US gives free meals to kids from low income families.

Tbf, we also try to get rid of our every couple of years.

Every other party makes the conservatives look good with how shit they are is the problem.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 6

Not really. Every other party looks shit given that the Conservatives own the media and run a 24/7 propaganda campaign

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Very original, mate.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

You're in a very real danger of screwing up in every way we have England. Get your heads together, FFS.

8 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 3

Out problem is old people voting them and lazy uninformed asshats not giving a shit.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I prefer Australia's way: Vote or get fined.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

We should have that. I'm guessing there's a bunch of exclusion / valid reason clauses. Also how does it work in extreme remote regions?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Can't say I know too much about it beyond that. All things that would have to be worked out.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't blame me, I voted Lib Dem last time. (cries softly in the corner)

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 4

rip

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only way to stop May is to vote Labour, it's a favourable choice but Corbyn is so weak.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

In what way is he weak? He's a man who has consistently stick to his values and isn't afraid to speak against inequality.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Depends on your constituency. This isn't about making Labour win, this is about cutting the conservatives' seats.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

DEPLOY THE CLEGG

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Cheeky. Nah, but I just wasn't confident in Labour.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Who was. I fully understand voting for Lib Dem they seemed to be the only guys not in a bullshit throwing contest

I've reached the conclusion that the UK is the America of Europe.

8 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 4

Only difference is that Americans know that their country is powerful while British think that their country is powerful.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

At least he have Universal healthcare..... but not for long if the Tories get their way.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Where do you think America got it from?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It runs in the geo-political family.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Or, due to age, & family relation, USA is the UK of the Americas?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You're not far off, at this point.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

It's worth noting I reached said conclusion from living in Southampton for a couple months. I've been hearing that Tories suck.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's very vogue at the minute to hate anyone who tells the truth and to claim anyone who says what you want to hear is "honest"

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The only things I've heard from Theresa May is STRONG AND STABLE and taking away school dinners.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They do. They also fuck pigs.
