OK, this is a lie. I found about it months ago, and decided to share it today considering the anniversary of the supposed end of the world in 2012
The reason that the world was supposed to have ended on 21/12/12 (12/21/12 for "others") is that it was the last day that the Mayan calender accommodated in it. This newer "end of the world" is the same, except it involves how our computers perceive time. Most computers these days use a 32 bit integer, (ie 32 digits of 0s and 1s).
On the aforementioned date, all of the bits except the left most one will have reached 1, running out of "space", and overflowing the counter. Another recent place where this happened recently is PSY's Gangnam Style video on youtube, which also reset the counter, and sent it into negative. Google have now upgraded the counter to 64 bit, the same which will be done eventually to this time problem.

Changing the Youtube counter to 64-bit seemed superfluous since they could have just interpreted it as unsigned.

64 bit architectures are quite common now. Any computer with over 4GB of RAM needs it to make full use of the memory.

If you're still using a 32 bit OS in 2038, you're using less than 3GB of ram and probably not meeting the minimum requirements of anything.

So, North Korea is fucked.

It looks like they're...running outta time.
