Ruins of the Rebecca Blast Furnace, Columbiana Co, Ohio [4080x1884] [OC]

Remains of the Blast Furnace that was built by Gideon Hughes, who came to New Lisbon, Ohio in 1807

A channel diverted from the Little Beaver River turned an undershot waterwheel behind the furnace.

This powered the bellows which forced air into the stack containing a mixture of Charcol, Limestone, and Kidney Iron Ore

The melted iron was then collected behind the hearth dam and ladled out.

The capacity was 2 tons per day, and the fuel ratio was 200 Bushels of Charcoal per Ton of Iron

The melt sold at the time for $90 per Ton

A flood shut down operations in 1832

I do not believe this is the same Rebecca Furnace, given that they are more than 150 miles apart by modern roads. But none the less, an interesting read!
