The appeal of conspiracy theories is that it makes conspiracy theorists feel like they are privy to knowledge that the majority are not. If it is a well known fact that everybody knows, knowing it does not make them feel special. (You absolutely know that they are substandard human beings with shitty lives and NEED to feel special.)
Without that feeling of being special, they think there must be something more behind it all; that the well known fact cannot be the real truth of the matter.
