I love Star Trek and tbh I didn't know each ship had it's own insignia. I guess I really never noticed.

I wonder who designs those in-universe. Like, does the captain get to pick, a Starfleet committee? Was it public submissions?
Constellation's designer was clearly having a weird time, and Excalibur's fucked up by not making it sword-shaped.
Also I forgot I was in random mode so this comment is weirdly timed.
CaffeineManic
Woah, how did I not know that every ship had a different emblem on their Comm badge?
BVSmirk
They only did it in TOS
LordHosk
Because they kept screwing it up so much, space station personnel, and random other ship crews also had the enterprise delta.
Elnauriel
Don't feel bad. The fact that the Enterprise delta became the universal starfleet emblem in all the other series sets a precedent.

Wait was there not a USS Constellation in the Constellation Class (most notable being the Stargazer Picard's first command)
Lots of ship names get reused in ST. The defiant and intrepid became their own classes as well as the constellation.
Meltemi
There was. It's seen in a single background display in one film, and it's generally assumed it was named for the Constitution-class ship.
Different ship, same name. https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/USS_Constellation_(NCC-1017) is the Constitution-class vessel seen in TOS.
https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/USS_Constellation_(NX-1974) is the type vessel for the Constellation class between the TOS/TNG eras.
are all prototypes NX? e.g. NX whatever Galaxy for the Galaxy design?
Apparently not: https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/USS_Galaxy is registered as NCC-70637. And, while never explicitly named in the canon,
an occasionally-referenced Constitution-class ship, NCC-1700, is stated in official companion books to be the USS Constitution.

Chinese counterfeit patch.
The rendering on Memory Alpha has it, but it's been so long since TOS that I don't recall which is accurate.
Update: I found a better shot of Decker. I have no idea why his assignment patch is missing the division.
IamNotaFreakyFishGuy
I think it's still there in the same place, but it's done in gold. Maybe the costume department ran out of black thread.
Could it be because he's a Commodore? Would it still be "Command" division if you're a flag officer?

It isn't but mission crew is from the Air Force. Nasa launches military equipment into space. They have a close working relationship.
Well, NASA follows the "Outer Space Treaty of 1967" which would be in conflict with military operations.
