Can't say i understand the whole life = box of chocs argument. Like, yes you fucking do know what you're going to get, chocolates! The same pissing chocolates described on the box! And if your box doesn't have those descriptions it's potentially violating some legislation about fucking allergies.

I think the implied reason is the inability to read the description on the box. The lid could also be otherwise unavailable.
The metaphor is therefore referring to the point that you never know all the factors of life.
